
WVU Opens Season with Two Weekend Road Matches

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 2-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opens its 2024-25 season this weekend on the road against No. 20 Citadel and No. 5 Georgia Southern.
WVU opens its season against Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday with the match slated for an 8 a.m. ET start. On Sunday, the Mountaineers travel to Statesboro, Georgia for a match at 8 a.m. against Georgia Southern.
West Virginia is 2-3 all-time against Citadel in a series that began in 1959. The two programs last met in 1968. The meeting with Georgia Southern is just the second in program history. WVU won the match 4751-4658 during the 2022-23 season.
The Mountaineers finished the 2023-24 campaign with a 13-0 record, including a 6-0 mark inside the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC). WVU claimed its 16th GARC Tournament Championship while also producing its 15th GARC Regular Season title.
West Virginia earned their 16th consecutive bid to the NCAA Rifle Championships last season. WVU concluded its season at the event, shooting a 4729 at the championship to finish in second place.
