
Mountaineers Fall in Five Sets to Duke

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 2, 2023) – The West Virginia University volleyball team (2-4) fell in five sets, Saturday night to Duke (3-2) in Durham, North Carolina at the Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils secured the match in set five, with two other wins occurring in the first and fourth set. Duke was victorious with scores of 25-18, 23-25, 23-25, 25-23 and 18-16.
"We had many chances to win the match, but unfortunately came up short," WVU coach Reed Sunahara said. "We showed a lot of promise as we battled but need to finish sets."
Offensively, West Virginia prevailed over Duke. The Mountaineers combined for 62 kills, and 166 attacks, besting the Blue Devils in both categories.
The second-set victory fueled the Mountaineers to grab the third with an identical score of 25-23, but ultimately it wasn't enough to secure the win for West Virginia.
Junior outside hitter Hailey Green led the way offensively for West Virginia, putting down 20 kills on 61 attacks.
Redshirt senior Lauren DeLo was a Swiss army knife for the Mountaineers, combining for five kills, 42 assists, four service aces and 14 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Tierney Jackson was a huge part of West Virginia's set wins and made plays when it mattered. Jackson combined for eight kills, 26 assists, three service aces and three digs.
Defensively, West Virginia collected 56 digs and seven blocks.
The Mountaineers travel to Hamilton, New York on Thursday, Sept. 7 through Saturday, Sept. 9, for the Colgate Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament. All matches will be held at Cotterell Court. West Virginia will face off against Colgate on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m., followed by Cornell on Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. and end the weekend against University at Albany on Sept. 9 at 4:30 p.m. Fans unable to attend can follow along live at wvusports.com.
