
Mountaineers Sweep Le Moyne in Season Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The West Virginia University volleyball team defeated Le Moyne in three sets, kicking off their season at the College of Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C., on Friday, Aug. 25.
West Virginia made key plays when it mattered, particularly in the second set, winning the match by scores of 25-10, 25-19 and 25-15.
The Dolphins took the first point of the match, after an attack error from the Mountaineers. West Virginia struck back with two kills, leading set one 2-1, which gave the squad the score advantage throughout the rest of the set.
West Virginia never trailed throughout the match, holding the lead through three sets. The Mountaineers had a .381 hitting percentage, compared to the Dolphins .024.
The Mountaineers played every athlete against the Dolphins, giving the entire squad court time.
"It was nice that everyone was given the chance to play tonight," WVU coach Reed Sunahara said. "I think that we played well, we still need to improve our game and fine-tune the details."
Sophomore outside hitter Bailey Miller and freshman middle blocker Maddy McGath dropped down eight kills each, leading the team.
Redshirt senior setter Lauren DeLo and freshman setter Katie Kolar added 17 attacks apiece against Le Moyne, and fifth year libero Camilla Covas collected six attacks as well.
Miller, Kolar and Covas served up two service aces apiece for the Mountaineers. Overall, West Virginia had nine service aces compared to Le Moyne's zero.
Fifth year libero Camilla Covas led the Mountaineers with 10 digs.
Additionally, West Virginia notched 46 kills and 40 digs, dominating Le Moyne.
Next up, the Mountaineers continue competition at the College of Charleston Classic on Saturday, Aug. 26. West Virginia begins the day against Davidson at 2:00 p.m., followed by the College of Charleston at 7:00 p.m., inside TD Arena. Live stats for the match can be found on WVUsports.com.
