MORGANTOWN, W.Va
. – West Virginia University head women's tennis coach
Miha Lisac has announced Calvin Song as the new assistant coach for the Mountaineers for the 2023-24 season.
"We are excited to add Calvin Song to our program," Lisac said. "Calvin comes from a great major program and is very well-recommended by some of the top coaches in the game. He is an outstanding person and I'm looking forward to having him work with the team on and off the tennis courts as we are building the program onto the national stage."
"My family and I are very grateful to be joining the Mountaineer family," Song said. "I would like to thank head coach
Miha Lisac, Brittney O'Dell and West Virginia University Athletics for providing me with this phenomenal opportunity. I can't wait to get to work with our players, staff and community and build off West Virginia's momentum."
Song was recently an assistant coach at Fresno State, joining the Bulldogs in February 2021. He was part of the team that finished 20-4 during the 2021-22 season, and a program that went a combined 21-9 in conference play in three seasons.
During his time at Fresno State, the Bulldogs won the 2022 Mountain West Conference regular-season championship for the first time in school history. The Bulldogs had three players named Mountain West Player of the Year while Song was on the coaching staff.
Fresno State also had a doubles team that was ranked No. 45 in the country and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2023. Song assisted in assembling a mid-major recruiting class that was ranked No. 14 by Tennis Recruiting Network in 2022.
Prior to his position at Fresno State, Song had stops at Wake Forest as a men's volunteer assistant coach and at Iowa as a women's volunteer assistant coach.
During his time at Iowa, he helped the Hawkeyes upset then-No. 50 Kansas State and defeat Michigan State before the season ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before his volunteer assistant position, Song was an assistant tennis professional at Iowa from 2016-20. In this role, he helped organize and coordinate tennis camps, led practice sessions and directed all United States Tennis Association (USTA) events at the facility.
Song is a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) elite pro-certified coach, and he was named the 2020 USPTA Missouri Valley Iowa Pro of the Year. He graduated from Iowa State in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing.
