MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia Rowing program announced its team award winners for the 2022-23 year on Sunday, May 7, at the Erickson Alumni Center, recognizing senior award recipients and the Hammer, Flame, Most Improved and MVP awards.
While all the members of the rowing team are varsity student-athletes, the award winners are named for the traditional novice and varsity squads that comprise the rowing program. All awards, apart from the Senior Award and the Hammer, are voted on by the team.
The Hammer - The Hammer Award is presented to one varsity and one novice athlete every year with the fastest recorded 2k erg scores of the season. It recognizes the importance of power and erg speed in the sport of rowing.
Varsity: Katherine Capitan
Novice: Emma Higgins
Most Improved - The Most Improved Award is granted to the varsity and novice athletes who are recognized by their teammates as having made the biggest improvements in their rowing performance throughout the year. These improvements are accomplished through hard work on the erg, water and in the weight room.
Varsity: Emily Dumford
Novice: Shelby Andre
The Flame - The Flame Award is given to the varsity and novice athletes who are most recognized by their teammates for consistent work ethic, contributions to the team, and serving as positive role models within rowing and beyond. These athletes lift up their teammates with words, attitude and true Mountaineer Spirit, through their darkest and brightest days as Mountaineers.
Varsity: Michaela Pulick
Novice: Anneliese Carney
MVP Award - This award is given to the varsity and novice student-athletes whose teammates have recognized them as being essential components to the success of the team. Consideration is given to on and off-water performances, as well as leadership and a focus on contributions to racing speed on the water. This was an exceptional category this year as not only was there a tie in the novice category, but the varsity winner has won her second MVP in a row.
Varsity: Lydia Nicolai
Novice: Helena Radford & Emma Higgins
Senior Award – The Senior Oar is awarded to each of our 2023 graduates: Maxine Cassell, Ally Fisher, Lydia Nicolai, Kaira Niedoba, Michaela Pulick, Sydney VanAuken and Ryleigh Williams. Williams is the only one from this group who will be returning to race next season, while she pursues her master's degree.
The rowing team will travel to Austin, Texas, to compete on Sunday, May 14, in the Big 12 championship at Lake Walter E. Long.
