MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University track and field team claimed her third consecutive 3,000-meter steeplechase title at the Big 12 Conference Championships hosted by the University of Oklahoma on Saturday, May 13, in Norman, Oklahoma.
McCabe won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:12.79.
"Today was a strong day for the team," Coach Sean Cleary said. "The steeple chase been very good to WVU over the years, and tonight was no exception. Ceili has now won her third title in as many years in what was a very tactical race. This will serve as a nice time up for her, as we prepare for the NCAA Championships."
Redshirt senior Mikaela Lucki earned a personal best time of 4:18.77 in the 1,500-meter run to advance to the conference finals. Sophomore Cassandra Williamson also earned a spot in the conference finals for the 800-meter, earning a time of 2:07.26. The finals for both events take place on Sunday, May 14.
"I am very happy to have both Cass and Lucki move into the finals," Cleary added. "The fields at this year's Big 12s are as strong or stronger than any year we have been in the conference. Both executed their races, as they needed to and live to run another day."
Senior Katherine Dowie competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with McCabe and earned her third All-Big 12 honor in as many years.
"For Katherine, this marks her third All-Big 12 performance over the past three years," Cleary commented. "I am especially pleased with the aggressiveness that Katherine showed out there after not being at full strength. Both she and Ceili ran very well tonight."
Redshirt senior Hayley Jackson also competed in the 1,500-meter run and crossed the finish line at 4:30.33.
"Unfortunately, we came into the meet under the weather with a fairly large percentage of the team," Cleary said. "It was tough to watch Hayley go out in the semifinal. I am proud of the effort she delivered for being less than at full strength."
The conference championships conclude Saturday, May 14, with action beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET. Live stats and streaming are available on WVUsports.com.
