MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team competes in two meets this week. The Mountaineers are competing at the Penn Relays hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on Thursday, April 27, with the Mountaineer Twilight taking place on Saturday, April 29, at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan park in Morgantown.
Senior
Rachel Butler and redshirt junior
Charlotte Wood are competing in the 5,000-meter run in Philadelphia, while redshirt senior
Hayley Jackson is also set to compete at the relays in the 1,500-meter run. Both events are set to take place on Thursday, with the 1,500 set to begin at 5:40 p.m. ET followed by the 5,000 at 7:15 p.m. Action is Morgantown is set to begin at 5:05 p.m. on Saturday. WVU last competed at the Penn Relays during the 2017-18 season. Then-redshirt senior Amy Cashin won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and broke her own program record in the process with a personal best time of 9:59.40. Cashin went on to break the record again with a time of 9:58.75, and that time stood until current sophomore
Ceili McCabe claimed it for herself. McCabe currently holds the record with a time of 9:30.69.
Last season at the Mountaineer showcase, WVU claimed nine individual victories, including five in the field and four on the track. Then-junior
Sada Wright won the discus with a throw of 44.81 meters, while then-sophomore
Lynsie Curtis claimed first in pole vault with a height of 3.65 meters.
Additionally, then-sophomore
Abigale Mullings took first-place in high jump with a jump of 1.71 meters. WVU continued to dominate the jumping events, with then-junior Peter-Gay McKenie winning the long jump with a distance of 5.48 meters. Then-junior Myesha Nott wrapped up the jumpers for West Virginia, taking triple jump with a 12.55-meter effort.
Of note, Wood led the way over 1,500 meters with a time of 4:26.67. Jackson also claimed victory, winning the 800-meter with a time of 2:05.92. Then-junior
Tessa Constantine completed the 400 hurdles in 59.31 to claim an additional first-place for the Mountaineers, with McCabe exhibiting her dominance in the 3,000 steeplechase with a 9:32.14 performance.
West Virginia's events at Mylan Park on Saturday consist of the discus and high jump in the field with the 100-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 800-meter, 4x100 relay, 400-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 1,500-meter run, 4x400-meter relay, 5,000-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase.
