Mountaineers Struggle Saturday Afternoon in Austin

Box Score Fifth-ranked Texas rolled to an 94-60 victory over West Virginia Saturday afternoon at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns (20-5, 9-3) led by 21 points at halftime and were never challenged afterward by a Mountaineer team coming off impressive home wins over Oklahoma and Iowa State.

Today, West Virginia (15-10, 4-8) started off well leading 12-8 through the first six minutes before Texas got on a roll. The next seven minutes saw the Longhorns outscore the Mountaineers 26-7, and another two-minute run got the lead to 20 with 1:55 left.

Indicative of the way things went today, the final play of the first half saw Arterio Morris pick Joe Toussaint's pocket leading to Sir'jabari Rice's fastbreak dunk, giving Texas a 51-30 halftime advantage.

"They shot the ball extremely, extremely well," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "We went back to turning the ball over excessively."

As was the case the first time these two teams played in Morgantown, a 69-61 Texas victory, turnovers were the story. West Virginia turned the ball over 20 times in that game and matched that total in today's 34-point loss.

"I think the vast majority of the turnovers were not pressure-induced," Huggins said. "They did get up in us and I thought the game started out very physical on their end. Everybody keeps talking about we're physical but we're not like that. They were physical early, and we didn't respond to it very well."

Throw in some poor Mountaineer shooting (19 of 54) to the mix and you're looking at their worst loss since a 39-point defeat to top-ranked Kentucky in an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game on March 26, 2015, in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Mountaineers endured a pair of 31-point road losses at TCU and Texas Tech during the 2019 season.

Rice came off the bench to score a game-high 24 points for the Longhorns. He made 5-of-6 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point distance, while making all 10 of his free throw attempts. Texas was 16 of 16 from the charity stripe in the first half and finished the game 24 of 25.

"They're talented," Huggins said of the Longhorns, "but we obviously shouldn't lose like that."

Texas, idle since Monday night's 88-80 loss to Kansas on Monday night, outscored West Virginia 32 to 8 off turnovers, 28 to 12 in the paint and 47 to 29 off the bench.

Marcus Carr (16), Timmy Allen (14) and Morris (12) also reached double figures for the Longhorns.

Emmitt Matthews Jr. was the only WVU player to reach double figures with 13 – 12 of those coming in the first half.

Huggins emptied his bench at the 10-minute mark and played mostly backups for the remainder of the game.

West Virginia will hop on a bus and travel to Waco, Texas, to take on Baylor Monday night. The 14th-ranked Bears have a short road trip to TCU to face the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth later today.

"We'll have the managers go beg and borrow as much ice as they can possibly can and we'll try to get them ready tomorrow just to go out and go through Baylor stuff," Huggins said. "Obviously, we're not going to go really hard or really long because they obviously need to be off their feet.

"This has been a really hard run for anybody playing as many games as we've played and traveled as much as we've traveled," he added. "It's rough. The other teams in this league complain about coming to Morgantown, how about what we do game after game after game?"
