Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (4-2, 0-0 Big 12) rallied late to defeat in-state foe, Marshall, 4-3, Friday afternoon in Morgantown.
The competition against the Thundering Herd began with doubles play. Sophomore/senior pair
Camilla Bossi and
Ting-Pei Chang fell, 6-1, to Marshall's Emma Vanderheyden and Johanna Strom. Junior
Momoko Nagato and sophomore
Michaela Kucharova defeated Marshall's Gabrielle Clairotte and Rieke Gillar, 6-4. Marshall claimed the doubles point after fifth-year senior
Pei-Ju Hsieh and redshirt freshman
Maja Dodik fell short to Aisling McGrane and Sophia Hurrion, 4-6.
During singles play, Kucharova was the first to finish, falling to Strom in two sets, 4-6, 2-6. Next up, Nagato defeated McGrane, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Chang fought through all three sets but fell to Marshall's Doroteja Joksovic, 2-6, 6-3, 5-7.
In the No. 1 spot, Bossi won the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second, 4-6, against Vanderheyden. Bossi secured the match in the third set, 7-6(4).
In the No. 5 spot, Dodik defeated Clairotte in two sets, 6-2, 6-1, to tie the match at 3-3.
Hsieh clinched her second match of the season for the Mountaineers after battling against Hurrion to come out victorious in two sets, 6-4, 7-5.
