MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (November 7, 2023) - The West Virginia University rowing team completed its 2023 fall season on Saturday, November 4, competing at the Head of the Occoquan Regatta in Fairfax Station, Virginia, on the Occoquan River.
The Mountaineer lineup consisted of seven boats and enjoyed an outstanding day on the water, finishing in the top 5 in every event in which they competed. The Novice squad had an excellent showing as well in their first regatta, finishing with a gold medal and a fourth-place result in its two races.
"In addition to some solid performances on the water, the team did a great job navigating their first race," Tina Griffith, WVU associate head coach said. "Generally-speaking, mistakes were a result of too much effort, which is an excellent problem to have. Their actions and results from today make me very excited for the future."
The Varsity squads were able to get a preview of the teams they will face this upcoming spring at the Occoquan Regatta. The waters were not so smooth to start the day as the Varsity 8 boat was rocked by a motorboat wake in the first minute of its race. Water crashed over gunnels, resulting in a rower to lose her oar momentarily and, eventually, bringing the boat to a complete stop. The crew finished the race in the top 5, while racing with a significant amount of water, weighing the boat down.
"The wake that hit our Varsity 8+ in their race put a damper on what was otherwise a good day for the Mountaineers," Jimmy King, WVU head rowing coach said. "While we didn't get a true race result to gauge our fall speed against some of our spring competitors, we did get a gritty result from that crew. Rather than put in a half-hearted effort, they reset and got back into the race despite the circumstances, placing in the top half of the field."
