MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will celebrate the program's 50-year anniversary in 2024. Throughout the season, fans can relive the program's most memorable moments with acknowledgments of the team's rich history.
The Mountaineers will celebrate 50 years of varsity status, dating back to 1974. Nanette Schnaible was tabbed the program's first head coach, before WVU Sports Hall of Fame coach Linda Burdette-Good took over one year later for the 1975 season. Burdette-Good was heralded for building the infant program into a national name in 37 seasons at the helm.
Burdette-Good's mark on women's athletics extends far beyond the Mountain State. Through her service on several prestigious national committees, including championing the creation of the East Atlantic Gymnastics League, she had an impact on the development of women's collegiate gymnastics and is recognized as one of the sport's true pioneers.
In celebration of this milestone, West Virginia fans can expect in-meet elements throughout the 2024 season, including guest appearances and recognitions, recap videos and features, giveaways and so much more.
The Mountaineers' home meet against Pitt, Towson and Western Michigan on Sunday, March 3, will serve as the team's 50-year celebration, as the team welcomes back alumni of the program to celebrate the milestone. It will feature in-meet presentations and videos, an alumni recognition and a giveaway with the commemorative 50 years of gymnastics logo.
