
West Virginia Falters to No. 4 Texas in Series Finale

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (9-17, 2-11 Big 12) fell to Texas on Friday night in a three-set sweep. The Longhorns claimed victory with scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-17.
Junior outside hitter Hailey Green tallied 14 kills on a .414 clip to lead the Mountaineers. Sophomore middle blocker Tierney Jackson followed behind with eight kills and freshman middle blocker Maddy McGath added seven.
Redshirt senior setter Lauren DeLo collected 34 of the Mountaineers' 38 total assists. West Virginia combined for 32 digs and five blocks.
West Virginia started off the match hot, with a 4-1 run over Texas. With the teams trading points, Jackson dropped down a kill to tie the first set, 13-13. The Longhorns responded with four straight points, taking the 17-13 lead. A late offensive push from West Virginia let the squad trail by only one point, as Texas held the 23-22 advantage. A kill from Green at the UT set-point looked promising for West Virginia, before Texas went on to seal the first set, 25-23.
The Mountaineers trailed 3-1 early in the second set. A kill from Green halted Texas before the Longhorns stormed off with a 3-0 run and a comfortable 16-8 lead. The Mountaineers once again rallied late, dishing a 3-0 run against UT. Texas pushed ahead to grab the second, 25-17.
Green kicked off the third and final set with a kill, as West Virginia led for the first time since the first set. The Mountaineers went on to lead 11-9 after a kill from freshman middle blocker Emma Beretich. Texas responded with a 4-0 run and held the lead for the rest of the match. Green added the last point of the match for West Virginia, as Texas went on to take the final set, 25-17.
West Virginia will travel to Lubbock, Texas for a pair of matches versus Texas Tech on Thursday, Nov. 9 and Friday, Nov. 10. Thursday's match is slated for 7 p.m. ET, followed by a 4 p.m. first serve on Friday.
