White Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After scoring two game-winning goals to lead the Mountaineers to wins over Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, sophomore forward Taylor White of the West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
White earned her first career game winner against OU on Oct. 5, before adding her second in as many games against OSU on Oct. 8. She helped spark a 4-0 win over Oklahoma, which eventually became coach Nikki Izzo-Brown's 400th career victory as a head coach.
 
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native now has eight goals and 18 points on the year to lead the team in both categories. The total marks the most goals scored in a single season by a WVU player since 2019. White ranks seventh in the Big 12 Conference in goals and goals per game.
 
West Virginia now hits the road for a two-game swing through Kansas, beginning in Manhattan with an 8 p.m. ET, tilt against Kansas State on Thursday, Oct. 12. The Mountaineers close the weekend in Lawrence, taking on the Jayhawks on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m.
 
This Week in Women's Soccer: The Mountaineers prepare for their final road trip of the regular season with a two-game swing through Kansas … the trip begins in Manhattan, as WVU takes on Kansas State on Thursday, Oct. 12 … kickoff at Buser Family Park is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET … West Virginia then travels to Lawrence to cap the weekend against the Jayhawks on Sunday, Oct. 15 … action inside Rock Chalk Park is slated for 2 p.m.
 
Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU capped its final two-game homestand of the regular season with a pair of victories over Oklahoma and Oklahoma State … first against the Sooners, four different Mountaineers found the back of the net to help the Mountaineers earn a 4-0 win on Oct. 5 … sophomore forward Taylor White opened the scoring in the 15th minute after a rebound shot from junior midfielder Lisa Schöppl … from there, fifth-year senior midfielder Maya McCutcheon, freshman forward Jordyn Wilson and junior forward Aria Bilal all tallied goals to lead West Virginia in the win … junior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran quarterbacked the offense with two assists, while Schöppl and freshman forward Jacey Rase also earned helpers on the night … the weekend concluded with a 1-0 win over Oklahoma State during the Mountaineers' annual "Pack It Pink" match on Oct. 8 … the two teams played in a scoreless tie for most of the match, but White broke through in the 68th minute to propel West Virginia to the victory … senior midfielder AJ Rodriguez earned the assist on White's game winner.
 
Notes: White tallied her first career game-winning goal against OU, followed by the second of her career against OSU … the Cincinnati, Ohio, native now leads West Virginia with eight goals and 18 points this season … her total marks the most goals for a WVU player in a single season since Alina Stahl also tallied eight in 2019 … she ranks seventh in the Big 12 Conference in goals and goals per game … with West Virginia's win over Oklahoma, coach Nikki Izzo-Brown secured her 400th career victory as a head coach … WVU's only coach in program history, Izzo-Brown's 29-year career record now stands at 401-142-72, which includes 28 seasons with the Mountaineers and one season at West Virginia Wesleyan … fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey and the Mountaineer defense earned a pair of shutouts against OU and OSU, moving their season total to seven clean sheets on the year … six of WVU's seven shutouts have been at home … Massey ranks fourth in the Big 12 in shutouts this season.
 
This Week in Men's Soccer: No. 3 West Virginia hits the road for one match this week against South Carolina on Thursday … kickoff from Stone Stadium in Columbia is set for 7 p.m. … the two teams played to a scoreless draw last season in Morgantown.
 
Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers earned two draws at home last week … on Wednesday, WVU tied with Loyola Maryland, 1-1, to wrap up non-conference play … on Sunday, the Mountaineers and James Madison played to a 2-2 draw in Sun Belt action … junior Frederik Jorgensen scored his first goal of the season and fourth of his career against the Dukes … senior Sergio Ors Navarro found the back of the net for the fourth time this season against JMU … senior Jackson Lee made six saves in the two contests.
 
Notes: West Virginia finished off an unbeaten non-conference season against Loyola with a 7-0-1 record, the first fall unbeaten non-conference slate in program history … the 8-0-4 start to begin the season sets a new program record, surpassing the 10-game unbeaten mark to open the 2021 season … it is tied for the second-longest unbeaten streak in program history, only trailing a 17-game streak over the course of the 1967 and 1968 seasons … senior Yutaro Tsukada now has eight assists this season, third-most in the country … the Mountaineers benefitted from an own goal against Loyola, the first by a WVU opponent since Robert Morris in the 2022 season opener.
 
This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia (7-11) faces off against UCF on Wednesday, Oct. 11 in Orlando, Florida ... the match is set to take place at The Venue at UCF, with a 7 p.m. ET, first serve …the Mountaineers return home on Saturday, Oct. 14, to face TCU … the match will be held at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, with a 2 p.m. start … fans who are not able to attend can follow live at WVUsports.com or on ESPN+.
 
Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers are coming off two road losses against Houston on Oct. 6 and 7 … West Virginia fell in three sets, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-20 on Oct. 6 … Houston would go on to close out the series in three sets on Oct. 7, 25-11, 25-20, 25-16.
 
Notes: The Mountaineers and Knights will meet for the first time since 1988 ... West Virginia leads the all-time program series, 1-0 … redshirt senior setter Lauren DeLo ranks 43rd nationally in assists per set, posting 10.18 … junior outside hitter Hailey Green is 40th overall in total kills with 226 this season and ranks 45th overall in kills per set with 3.90.
 
This Week in Cross Country: The West Virginia cross country will resume competition on Saturday, Oct. 28 for the Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Ames, Iowa.
 
Last Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers did not compete.
 
Notes: Redshirt senior Katherine Dowie set a personal best time of 20:44.1 in the women's 6k at the Paul Short Run.
 
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia is off this week before competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional in Lynchburg, Virginia, from Oct. 19-23.
 
Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers hosted the Martha Thorn Invitational from Oct. 6-7 ... West Virginia collected 12 wins during the three-day event, including 10 singles victories and two doubles wins.
 
Notes: The Mountaineers are led by a veteran group with two graduate students, one senior, three juniors and a redshirt sophomore ... graduate student Love-Star Alexis transferred from Middle Tennessee State during the offseason after compiling 89 career wins for the Blue Raiders ... head coach Miha Lisac named a new assistant coach for the upcoming season, as Calvin Song joins the program after spending the last three seasons at Fresno State.
 
This Week in Golf: West Virginia returns to action Monday through Wednesday at the Big 12 Match Play Championship … the event will take place at The Clubs at Houston Oaks, in Hockley, Texas, outside of Houston … for the sixth consecutive season, teams will compete at the par-71, 7,007-yard The Clubs at Houston Oaks … the tournament will feature match play rather than stroke play … the Mountaineers will face off against Texas Tech on Monday morning at 7:45 a.m. CT, and will go against Oklahoma State on Monday afternoon at 1:15 p.m. CT … on Tuesday morning, the Mountaineers will face off against Kansas at 7:45 a.m. CT … Wednesday's matchups will be finalized after play on Tuesday … senior Jackson Davenport, juniors Max Green and Todd Duncan and sophomores Kaleb Wilson and Carson Kammann will compete for the Mountaineers.
 
Last Week in Golf: The Mountaineers did not compete.
 
This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia hosts Penn State in its first dual action of the year ... the men's team will face the Nittany Lions on Friday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m., and the women's team will face PSU on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m., at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
 
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: The Mountaineers officially began the regular season by hosting the West Virginia State Games from Oct. 6-7 ... the men's team placed first ahead of Davis & Elkins ... the women's team placed second behind Marshall.
 
Notes: The men's swimming and diving team won all of its 16 events at the West Virginia State Games ... the women's team won eight total events ... sophomore Mia Cheatwood finished the meet with five total victories ... Cheatwood placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard individual medley and she was part of the relay teams that placed first in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard medley relay.

This Week in Rowing: West Virginia is idle this week ... the Mountaineers will not compete again until the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday, Oct. 28, in Philadelphia.
 
Last Week in Rowing: West Virginia hosted Duquesne for an exhibition at the WVU boathouse on Sept. 30.
 
This Week in Rifle: West Virginia hits the road for a pair of matches… up first, the Mountaineers take on No. 4 Ole Miss on Saturday at 8 a.m. ET, in Oxford, Mississippi… WVU then heads to Memphis, Tennessee, where it is set to take on No. 8 Memphis at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
 
Last Week in Rifle: The Mountaineers opened their season with a win over No. 11 Akron… WVU defeated the Zips 4751-4696…  the result is its first Great America Rifle Conference win of the season … WVU claimed eight of the top-10 spots on the individual leaderboard… fifth-year Mary Tucker and freshman Griffin Lake led the way on the leaderboard, finishing with 1188 aggregate scores … senior Molly McGhin took third with a 1187, as senior Matt Sanchez followed just behind with a score of 1186 …  fifth year Malori Brown came in fifth overall with a total of 1184 and Barnick finished sixth at 1183 … senior Tal Engler, junior Natalie Perrin and senior Becca Lamb also cracked the top 10, finishing in eigth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.
 
Notes: Matt Sanchez tied his career high in both smallbore (588) and air rifle (598) … his aggregate score was a career best … as a team, West Virginia ranks No. 1 nationally in aggregate average (4751), air rifle (2387) and smallbore average (2364) … six sit inside the top 10 of the individual aggregate score average … Tucker leads smallbore average (595) while Malori Brown is third (591).
