Tsukada Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Yutaro Tsukada of the No. 4 West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments.
 
In two road wins this past week, Tsukada tallied six points, scoring a goal while dishing out four assists. He has seven assists on the season, the fourth-most in the country.
 
Opening the week at UNC Greensboro, Tsukada assisted on both goals in a 2-1 victory over the Spartans, including a pristine free kick into the box for Max Broughton in the 81st minute, who scored the game-winning goal. Tsukada followed that performance with a goal and two assists in a 4-3 win over Georgia State, guiding the Mountaineers to their first Sun Belt victory of the season.
 
The Tokyo native will look to keep up his stellar play this week as the Mountaineers host two matches, beginning with Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. ET before taking on James Madison on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m.
 
This Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia returns to Morgantown for a pair of matches … up first, the Mountaineers play host to Oklahoma on Thursday, Oct. 5 … kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is tabbed for 7 p.m. ET … the homestand concludes against Oklahoma State for the Pink Match on Sunday, Oct. 12, with kickoff tabbed for 1 p.m. ET.
 
Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU hit the road for a two-game swing through Texas … the Mountaineers earned a 0-0 draw at No. 21 Texas, shutting out the nation's top offense in Austin … fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey collected a career-high nine saves in the draw … Texas outshot West Virginia 19-7, including 9-2 in shots on goal … the two teams were level with four corner kicks apiece … West Virginia concluded the week in the Lone Star State falling 2-1 to Big 12 newcomer Houston in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 1 … the Cougars struck first, but the Mountaineers responded quickly with a goal from sophomore forward Taylor White … however, UH reclaimed the lead just minutes later and kept it for the duration, winning 2-1 … West Virginia outshot Houston 11-5, including 4-3 in shots on goal ... WVU just edged the Cougars in corner kicks, 8-6.
 
Notes: White paces the team with six goals on the year … West Virginia became just the second team to shut out Texas this season, while the clean sheet marked the Mountaineers' fifth of the year … Massey's career-high total bested her previous career-best mark of seven saves, which she set in the 2021 match against the Longhorns then later matched four more times, including three times in 2022 … the total marks her most stops in a match since notching seven saves against TCU in the Big 12 Championship final last season … with the draw, WVU moved to 10-3-4 all-time against Texas, including 4-2-2 in Austin … of note, the draw between the Mountaineers and Longhorns marked their third scoreless tie over the last five matches, dating back to 2021.
 
This Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia returns home for two games this week … the Mountaineers will play Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. ET … the game will be Fan Appreciation Night and Dollar Night with tickets and select concessions available for one dollar … on Sunday, Oct. 8, WVU will battle James Madison in a Sun Belt Conference matchup with kickoff set for 4 p.m. … it will be Youth Soccer Day and Mountaineer Kids Club Day.
 
Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers went 2-0 on the road this past week, defeating UNC Greensboro and Georgia State … WVU took down UNC Greensboro, 2-1, on Sept. 26 … Marcus Caldeira scored the first goal of the game, his eighth of the season … Max Broughton scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute, his first of the season … Yutaro Tsukada assisted on both goals … against Georgia State on Sept. 30, the Mountaineers won, 4-3, in their highest-scoring game of the season … Yutaro Tsukada finished the game with a goal and two assists … Luke McCormick scored a brace, his first two goals of the season … Sergio Ors Navarro found the back of the net for the third time this season … Tsukada finished the week with six points on one goal and four assists.
 
Notes: The Mountaineers are ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches poll … it is the fifth time in program history that WVU has had a 10-match unbeaten streak, also doing so in 2021, 1973, 1967-68, and 1966 … Marcus Caldeira is sixth in the nation with eight goals this season … Yutaro Tsukada is fourth in the country with seven assists … WVU is one of 10 teams in the country without a loss this season, including three Sun Belt teams (Marshall, WVU, Old Dominion) … in the second official NCAA RPI rankings, the Mountaineers clocked in at No. 9. … the win against the Panthers was the first for the Mountaineers when allowing three goals since defeating Northern Illinois, 4-3, in overtime in 2018
 
This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia (7-9) heads to Houston for a series of matchups on Friday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m. ET and Saturday, Oct. 7, at 4 p.m. … both matches against the Cougars will take place at the Fertitta Center in Houston.
 
Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers continued the 2023 campaign on Sept. 27, against Kansas State with a 3-0 loss to the Wildcats … the Mountaineers closed out the week with a 3-2 win over Chicago State on Sept. 30 … sophomore middle blocker Tierney Jackson led the team with 15 kills, hit for .444 on 27 attempts, collected two service aces and five digs.
 
Notes: The Mountaineers and Cougars will meet for the first time since 2011 … the Big 12 newcomers currently lead the series 3-0, which dates back to 1987 … West Virginia ranks 40th overall in kills per set, posting 13.53 … redshirt senior setter Lauren DeLo ranks 35th nationally in assist per set, and has collected 537 total assists this season and averages 10.33 assists per set … junior outside hitter leads the squad with 226 kills this season, and is tied at No. 41 in kills per set with 4.00.
 
This Week in Cross Country: West Virginia travels to Pittsburgh for the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 7 … the race will take place at Schenley Park and is scheduled for a 10 a.m. ET start time.
 
Last Week in Cross Country: The West Virginia cross country team competed at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 30 … the race was held at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course at Lehigh … redshirt sophomore Sarah Tait finished 14th overall and led the Mountaineers with a time of 20:38.0 ... redshirt senior Katherine Dowie followed behind with a time of 20:44.1 and a 19th-place finish … other scoring runners included freshman Lexi Lamb, freshman Audrey Hall, redshirt senior Mikenna Vanderheyden and redshirt sophomore Aubrie Custer.
Notes: Dowie set a personal best time of 20:44.1 in the women's 6k at the Paul Short Run … the Mountaineers rank second overall in the Mid-Atlantic Region and are receiving votes in the coaches poll released by the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coach Association (USTFCCCA) last week.
 
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will host the Martha Thorn Invitational in Morgantown from Oct. 6-8 ... six teams will compete in the invitational, including, James Madison, Louisville, Maryland, Penn State, Duquesne and West Virginia.
 
Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers were off last week after competing in the Thunder in the Mountains in Charleston, West Virginia from Sept. 22-24.
 
Notes: The Mountaineers are led by a veteran group with two graduate students, one senior, three juniors and a redshirt sophomore ... graduate student Love-Star Alexis transferred from Middle Tennessee State during the offseason after compiling 89 career wins for the Blue Raiders ... head coach Miha Lisac named a new assistant coach for the upcoming season, as Calvin Song joins the program after spending the last three seasons at Fresno State.
 
This Week in Golf: West Virginia is idle this week … the Big 12 Match Play Championship will begin Monday, Oct. 9, in Hockley, Texas.

This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia officially begins the 2023-24 season on Oct. 6-7 as it hosts the West Virginia State Games at The Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.

Notes: The Mountaineers finished the 2022-23 season with the men's team placing third at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, and the women's team placing fourth ... sophomore Mia Cheatwood returns to the pool this year after setting multiple records for WVU in her freshman season ... overall, West Virginia collected 16 medals at the Big 12 Championships ... the Mountaineers will be the host for the 2024 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships at The Aquatic Center at Mylan Park from Feb. 28-March 2.

This Week in Rifle: West Virginia continues action at the 2024 Olympic Trials Part 1 on Monday, Oct. 2, and Tuesday, Oct. 3 … WVU opens NCAA action on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. ET at the WVU Rifle Range… the opener is against Akron and will also serve as the Mountaineers' first Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) match.
 
Last Week in Rifle: Eight Mountaineers opened competition on Sept. 28, at the 2024 Olympic Trials Part 1… Mary Tucker, Matt Sanchez and Gavin Barnick each qualified for the finals … Tucker took first place in women's air rifle … Sanchez finished fifth while Barnick took eighth in men's smallbore.
 
Notes: The Olympic Trials have three parts with competitor's quota from each competition carrying over to the next event … the top two total scores following the third and final stage will represent Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
