MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's swimming and diving teams defeated Iowa State and Northern Iowa on Saturday afternoon, at Beyer Pool in Ames, Iowa.
 
The Mountaineers were victorious over the Cyclones, earning a score of 157-142 for their first Big 12 Conference victory of the season. WVU defeated the Panthers, 209-90.
 
"Hard-fought win for the ladies. I'm extremely proud of how they battled and competed today," coach Vic Riggs said. "Having Marian win the 1-meter and then getting third and fifth place as well, put the team in the position to win the meet by winning the 400 free relay, which the ladies did. Overall, it was a great team effort with 11 event wins."
 
In the diving well, senior Marian Tiemeier finished strong to earn first place in the 1-meter with a score of 271.25.
 
West Virginia tallied its first win of the day in the 200-yard medley relay. Senior Jacqueline McCutchan, freshman Mia Cheatwood, senior Harna Minezawa and freshman Ada Szwabinka finished with a time of 1:43.79. The 400-yard free relay team consisting of McCutchan, freshman Gabriela De La Torre, junior Abby Reardon and Szwabinka also secured first place, finishing in 3:26.47.
 
Cheatwood added two solo victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.13) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.30), as well as a second-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:05.79). McCutchan finished first in the women's 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 51.90, and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.30). Szwabinska finished the 50 free in 23.83, good enough to secure second place.
 
Reardon led a 1-2 finish for the Mountaineers in the 200 free, touching the pads in 1:52.14. Finishing just behind in second, De La Torre secured a time of 1:53.92. Three Mountaineers finished in the top five of the 200-yard butterfly event, including sophomore Mia Walters with a time of 2:04.82 to secure first place. Junior Lilly Culp (2:06.36) finished in third, and sophomore Morgan Burton (2:07.84) finished in fifth.
 
Next up, West Virginia returns to Morgantown for its first home meet of the 2023 season against Villanova. Competition is set to begin at 12 p.m. ET.
