MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University and the University of Texas went head-to-head in a challenge off the field, leading up to WVU-Texas football game, on Saturday, Oct. 1. Dating back to 2017, Texas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and WVU SAAC have engaged in a competitive food drive to see who can donate the most to those in need, known as "Together We Can."
The Mountaineers secured their first victory over the Longhorns this week with a total weight of 3,848 pounds, compared to Texas' 491 pounds. This marks WVU's third consecutive victory over UT. Together the two universities contributed over 4,300 pounds of canned goods and non-perishable foods to their respective on-campus food pantries.
"I couldn't be prouder of our student-athletes and specifically our SAAC leadership team for this campaign," Assistant Athletics Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services Tracy Keller said. "We doubled our donations from the previous year and had participation from all 18 of our programs. But more importantly, we were able to partner with The Rack to help fight hunger within the WVU community. Our students take a lot of pride in being a Mountaineer and it means a lot to our students when they can give back to the same community that shows so much support for them."
West Virginia's 18 varsity sports programs donated to the "Together We Can" food drive, led by rowing contributing more than 1,000 cans. All donated goods from West Virginia will go directly to The Rack: WVU Student Food Pantry.
"Being more than athletes and giving back to the community that supports us is something that we take pride in here at West Virginia University," WVU SAAC co-president Patrick Daum said. "SAAC gives us the opportunity to connect with amazing organizations like The Rack and help impact our community in a positive and productive way."
The West Virginia University SAAC is made up of 40+ student-athlete representatives who are committed to enhancing the student-athlete experience by serving as a medium of communication between their peers, institutional and conference administrators, NCAA representatives and coaches. Their work includes encouraging community engagement, academic excellence, personal and career development, and promoting a diverse and inclusive environment for the Mountaineers.
Outside of the "Together We Can" Food Drive, SAAC has a number of upcoming events to give back to the Mountain State, including Trunk-or-Treat in collaboration with Haunted Hoops, and participation in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion campaigns on the campus and national level.
"SAAC giving us the opportunity to have everyone from every team come together to give back to the community is the definition of the Mountaineer Family," WVU SAAC co-president Abbie Pierson said. "It means everything to us as athletes to give back to the people that support us daily. Campaigns like this and the things we do throughout the year, make us proud as SAAC and an athletic department."
