MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After tallying the second brace of her career in a 2-0 win at Iowa State, fifth-year senior forward Lauren Segalla of the West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Segalla scored goals in the 66th and 73rd minutes to help WVU earn the two-goal victory at Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa, on Sept. 25. The victory gave WVU its first Big 12 Conference win of the season, as well as help it go 1-0-1 in the first weekend of league play. The Salisbury, Connecticut, native's brace was her first since last season's matchup with Iowa State on Sept. 24, 2021, when she scored a pair to lead the Mountaineers to a 4-0 win over the Cyclones.

Additionally, Segalla's outing marked the first two-goal scorer for West Virginia since Oct. 17, 2021, while it also marked the Mountaineers' 127th two-goal performance all-time. Segalla paced the offensive attack with two goals, three shots and three shots on goal.

The Mountaineers (4-3-4, 1-0-1 Big 12) now return to Morgantown to open their home conference slate, playing host to Kansas on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia (4-3-4, 1-0-1 Big 12) was on the road last week to open Big 12 Conference play, going 1-0-1 on the weekend … on Sept. 22, WVU opened league competition with a 1-1 draw at Texas Tech … the two teams were scoreless at the half, but TTU broke through right after the break in the 47th minute … the Mountaineers responded with a goal of their own just 20 seconds later, when senior midfielder Maya McCutcheon tallied the equalizer off a ball from classmate Julianne Vallerand … in the final stats, West Virginia outshot Texas Tech, 9-6, and the Mountaineers also held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal … completing the weekend on Sept. 25, a brace from fifth-year senior forward Lauren Segalla helped WVU record a 2-0 win at Iowa State … Segalla earned her second career brace with tallies in the 66th and 73rd minutes … Sophomore forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran was credited with the assists on both goals, her second two-assist performance of the season … West Virginia outshot Iowa State, 14-9, while it placed eight shots on goal compared to just three for the Cyclones.

Notes: With the draw at Texas Tech, the Mountaineers remained undefeated in Big 12 Conference openers … they boast an overall record of 9-0-2 in openers since joining the league in 2012 … Segalla's two-goal performance at Iowa State was the first for the Salisbury, Connecticut, native since last season's matchup with Iowa State on Sept. 24, 2021, when she led the Mountaineers to a 4-0 win over the Cyclones … it also marked the first two-goal scorer for West Virginia since then-senior Isabella Sibley scored a pair of goals against Texas Tech on Oct. 17, 2021 … Segalla's brace marked the Mountaineers' 127th two-goal performance all-time … Heredia-Beltran's two-assist performance was her second this season, after she also recorded a pair against Saint Joseph's on Aug. 21 … senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey and the Mountaineer defense earned its sixth shutout of the season at Iowa State, while it also was their first since Sept. 11, against Bucknell … fifth-year senior Jordan Brewster made her 90th career start at Iowa State, moving her into a tie with Kadeisha Buchanan for the third-most starts in program history.

This Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia caps its three-match, road trip by taking on No. 24 Dayton on Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Dayton, Ohio … kickoff at Baujan Field is set for 7 p.m. ET … from there, WVU returns home to play South Carolina in a Sun Belt Conference matchup on Saturday, Oct. 1 … kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown also is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers (2-5-1, 0-1-1 Sun Belt) dropped a pair of road matches to top-25 foes … West Virginia fell, 2-1, at then-No. 13 Portland on Sept. 19, at Merlo Field in Portland, Oregon … WVU also suffered a 1-0 loss at No. 4 Marshall on Sept. 24, at Hoops Family Field in Huntington … senior midfielder Luke McCormick scored in the fourth minute against Portland to give the Mountaineers an early lead … however, the Pilots recorded the two goals of the night to claim the victory … against Marshall, WVU conceded an 85th-minute goal in the only tally of the night.

Notes: Tuesday's match is WVU's third straight against a ranked opponent on the road … the Mountaineers are 3-1 against Dayton in the all-time series … last year, West Virginia topped the Flyers, 3-0, on Sept. 21, 2021, in Morgantown … West Virginia meets South Carolina for the first time since 1982 on Saturday night … the Gamecocks leads the all-time series, 1-0 … following last week's setbacks, WVU is now 0-1 all-time against Portland, as well as 16-7-2 against Marshall … junior midfielder Ryan Crooks (2G, 4A) has been involved in six of WVU's nine goals this season … West Virginia has defeated a top-25 opponent in 14 of the last 16 seasons, with 17 top-15 wins in that span … WVU is 0-3 against ranked foes this fall.

This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia is set for its first Big 12 road swing with matches against TCU and Oklahoma … WVU begins the swing in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday, Sept. 29, with first serve set for 7 p.m. ET … the Mountaineers then travel to Norman, Okla. to take on the Sooners … the match begins at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Last Week in Volleyball: WVU (6-7) opened Big 12 Conference play at home welcoming Texas Tech to the WVU coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 24 … the Mountaineers began the match by taking the first two sets 27-25 and 25-22, before falling to the Red Raiders in five sets … fifth-year senior outside hitter Adrian Ell notched her second triple-double of the season, tallying 24 kills, 15 assists and ten digs … freshman outside hitter Bailey Miller earned her fifth double-double of the season, racking up 19 kills and ten digs … junior libero Skye Stokes led the squad with 31 digs … WVU led the match with 62 kills, seven service aces, 54 assists and 91 digs.

Notes: With 1.67 service aces per set, the Mountaineers rank second in the Big 12 … West Virginia also ranks sixth in digs per set (13.22) and opponent hitting percentage (.185) … through nine matches, Ell ranks seventh in the confernece in kills per set (3.29) and points per set (3.94) … Stokes is seventh in the Big 12 with 3.62 digs per set … redshirt freshman setter Kamiah Gibson ranks eighth in assists per set with 7.04, while Miller is eighth in the conference with 0.33 service aces per set.

This Week in Tennis: WVU is off this week ... the Mountaineers return to competiton on Oct. 7-9 to host their annual Martha Thorn Invitational.

Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia co-hosted Thunder in the Mountains alongside Marshall, from Sept. 23-25, in Charleston, West Virginia ... the two programs welcomed Cincinnati and VCU to the State Captial for the three-day invite ... the Mountaineers finished the weekend with 20 total wins, tallying 13 singles and seven doubles victories ... WVU had two pairs go undefeated, including duo junior Momoko Nagato and sophomore Michaela Kucharova and the Tandem of senior Ting-Pei Chang and sophomore Tatiana Lipatova ... during singles play, WVU saw three Mountaineers go undefeated, including Chang, Nagato and senior Pei-ju Hsieh.

Notes: Doubles pair Camilla Bossi and Ting-Pei Chang made their debut on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason rankings tied for No. 37 ... this marks a program first for the Mountaineers ... the tandem also qualified for the ITA Women's All-American Championships, notching another first for WVU women's tennis ... the squad returns to home to host their annual Martha Thorn Invitational ... WVU is set to welcome Duquesne, James Madison Louisville, and Penn State to the three-day tournament, from Oct 7-9.

This Week in Swimming & Diving: West Virginia opens its 2022-23 slate with its annual Gold-Blue Meet on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m., at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park

Last Season in Swimming & Diving: The Mountaineers combined to earn 13 medals at the 2022 Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships, including one gold, four silver and eight bronze ... fifth-year David Dixon won the men's 200-yard butterfly to earn his third career conference title ... junior Justin Heimes brought home two bronze medals at Big 12s, including the men's 100 and 200-yard backstroke ... freshman Mia Walters secured bronze in the women's 200-yard butterfly, while junior Paige Dressel took third in the women's 200-yard backstroke to round out WVU's individual bronze medal count ... in the diving well, senior PJ Lenz finished second on the men's platform ... WVU had seven divers qualify for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships ... the Mountaineers had two men qualify for the 2022 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, including Lenz and Dixon ... Dixon, a Richmond, Virginia native, earned a bid to the national meet for the fifth consecutive season, becoming the first Mountaineer in program history to do so ... two program records were broken during the 2021-22 campaign, including sophomore William Mullen's record-breaking performance at Big 12s in the 1650 free (15:21.57) ... the record was previously set in 1983 by Craig Cooper ... fifth-year Ana Zortea broke a program record in the women's 100-yard backstroke, as she bested the previous record with a time of 53.41.

Notes: WVU is set to host seven home events during the 2022-23 slate, including the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships for the second time since 2020 ... following the Gold-Blue Meet, the Mountaineers host the 11th annual WV State Games, from Oct. 14-15, to open the regular season ... WVU will send qualifying swimmers to compete in USA Swimming's 2022 Toyota U.S. Open from Nov. 30-Dec. 3, in Greensboro, North Carolina ... Texas will play host to this year's Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships, from Feb. 22-25.

This Week in Rifle: No. 7 West Virginia opens its 2022-23 season against No. 15 Memphis on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Morgantown … Saturday's contest against the Tigers is set for 10 a.m. ET, at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.

Last Season in Rifle: West Virginia finished with a 12-1 record, including a 7-1 mark inside the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) … the Mountaineers finished the season by capturing a share of the 2021-22 GARC regular-season title, along with Kentucky, marking the second consecutive season that WVU has brought home the regular-season crown … during the regular season, West Virginia defeated eight top-10 opponents, including two top-five teams … WVU also won 10 or more matches for the 12th time under coach Jon Hammond … the Mountaineers shot an NCAA Qualifying Score of 9441, which helped them earn their 14th consecutive bid to the NCAA Rifle Championships … at the 2021-22 GARC Championships, hosted by Army, West Virginia shot a 2345 smallbore and a 2387 in air rifle for a combined score of 4732 to finish second … prior to the GARC Championships, nine Mountaineer shooters earned a combined 25 honors on the All-GARC teams … the Mountaineers concluded their season by shooting a 4700 at the 2022 NCAA Rifle Championships, hosted by Air Force, and finished sixth at the event.

Notes: West Virginia is seeking its nation-best 20th NCAA Championship in 2022-23 … the Mountaineers are led by Hammond, who is in his 17th year as the team's head coach … he owns a 169-17 record in 16 seasons at WVU and has won six NCAA titles … West Virginia's 2022-23 team features nine returners and two newcomers … additionally, this year's squad includes one freshman, one sophomore, four juniors, four seniors and one fifth-year senior – Verena Zaisberger … Zaisberger returns for her final season with the Mountaineers in 2022-23 … the Hohenems, Austria, native served as a counter in 12 of 13 events a season ago and averaged 1178.077 overall across those contests … additionally, Zaisberger has won the NCAA Elite 90 Award in each of the last two seasons.
