MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Verena Zaisberger of the West Virginia University rifle team has been named to the 2021-22 Academic All-America Division I Women's At-Large First Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Wednesday.
Zaisberger is the sixth Mountaineer in program history to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and the first shooter since David Koenders in 2020 to bring home the honor. Additionally, she is the second West Virginia student-athlete to be named a First Team Academic All-American this year, joining Kevin Morris of the men's soccer team. Her selection to the Academic All-America Team is the first of her career.
"This is another wonderful award for Verena along with the others from this year," WVU coach Jon Hammond said. "I'm proud of all the hard work that Verena and her teammates do for their academics, and it's great for them to be recognized for these efforts. We haven't had a CoSIDA first-team award recipient since 2020, so it's a great reflection of the teams hard work."
With Zaisberger's honor, West Virginia has now seen 12 different shooters earn 24 total CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since 1984, including 18 honors which have come under Hammond's leadership.
A native of Hohenems, Austria, Zaisberger is one of 10 student-athletes on this year's Division I First Team to earn a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) and has now picked up seven honors for her work in the classroom this year. After receiving the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award from the Big 12 Conference in February, Zaisberger represented WVU on the Great American Rifle Conference's (GARC) Scholar-Athlete Team and earned her second consecutive NCAA Elite 90 Award in March. Following the season, the senior was selected to the Academic All-Big 12 At-Large First Team, the CoSIDA Academic All-District II Women's At-Large First Team and the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Scholastic All-America Team.
Zaisberger received her bachelor's degree in music and French in May 2022. Upon graduation, she was awarded the 2022 Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship from the Big 12.
On the range, Zaisberger owns six All-America honors from the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) and has been named to the All-GARC Teams eight times during her four seasons at West Virginia.
