MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Redshirt freshman
Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University track and field team earned All-American honors after placing third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, from June 8-11.
McCabe placed third in Thursday's semifinal after finishing the race in a time of 9:41.10 to advance to Saturday's final. In the final, McCabe earned All-American honors after completing the steeplechase in a WVU program best-time of 9:31.14. Her time ranks as the sixth fastest time in NCAA history.
"We are so happy for Ceili and this incredible performance," coach
Sean Cleary said. "This was without question the greatest collegiate steeplechase ever. Ceili finished third today, but leaves the meet as the sixth fastest steeplechaser in NCAA history. I am very proud of this performance. At the start of the season, we had higher goals for today's meet, but Ceili did an incredible job navigating a few minor setbacks. No excuses, she was beaten by two better women on the day. We leave Eugene happy, yet very hungry for next year."
McCabe joins former cross country and track and field stars Marie-Louise Asselin, Clara Grandt and Keri Bland as the only Mountaineer women to garner All-American honors three times in the same year. The honors were earned in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
The British Columbia, Canada native qualified for the championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after placing third (9:46.73) in the quarterfinals at the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Regional Championship from May 25-28, at Robert C. Haugh Complex - Outdoor Track and Field in Bloomington, Indiana.
McCabe entered the event ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 2 nationally in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best top time of 9:32.14 at the Mountaineer Twilight, on April 30, in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Last season, McCabe advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in her career. After finishing in sixth place with a time of 9:37.39 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase finals, McCabe took home her first outdoor track and field All-American Honors.
"Next, Ceili will race at the National Championships with the goal to qualify for the World Championships," Cleary said. "While not a guarantee to qualify for the team, today's performance will go a long way in opening that door for her."
