Rowing Uses Robert Morris Exhibition in Preparation for Big 12 Championship

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team used its Saturday exhibition at Robert Morris as preparation for its upcoming Big 12 Conference Championship on Lake Walter E. Long in Austin, Texas, on May 16.
"We enjoyed a very productive morning on the Ohio with RMU," WVU rowing coach Jimmy King said. "Working repeatedly on different aspects of our racing against another team is very beneficial providing that heightened level of competition that's hard to replicate in a training session."
On a sunny day with little wind, WVU enjoyed near ideal weather conditions for its last competition of the regular season. One non-weather factor that the crews had to contend with was the flow of the Ohio River.
Although accustomed to rowing with and against river current on the Monongahela River, the greater current of the Ohio was a consideration as the WVU crews assessed their boat speed and feel.
Coaches followed each race from start to finish as they normally would during a training session. Between each race coaches and crews conferred to assess and adjust in a fashion similar to the timeouts experienced in other sports.
"Over our final two weeks of the season, we'll proceed with a narrowed focus for each crew as we continue searching for more speed," King added.
