MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team had its most complete performance of the season in the George Mason Invitational on Sunday, completing first-place finishes in the finals of the 1V4 and 2V4 races, and had a second-place finish in the 2V8 competition.
"We had our most complete overall team performance today," WVU rowing coach
Jimmy King said. "It's great to see our 4s continuing to progress week to week, learning and building upon prior races. Our V8 raced well, pushing past earlier season frustrations.
"I'm looking to see them build some momentum from here. Our 3V8 responded very well in their final after experiencing an equipment mishap at the start of their heat. And I'm most pleased with the consistency and aggressiveness of our 2V8. No matter the circumstances, they just race… they're racers, which is essentially what we want from all of our crews."
Racing on the Occoquan Reservoir at Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax Station, Virginia, WVU started the day with the 2V4 boats. There were only three entries in that event so lanes were switched between rounds one and two instead of the typical heats and finals. WVU crossed the line first in both races convincingly.
In the next competition, the 1V4 secured first in their heat to move on to the grand finals in the afternoon. The boat had an even stronger race in the finals, opening up even more space between them and the other crews and placing first.
The 3V8 had a difficult first race, placing fourth in their heat, sending them to the petite finals. However, they rebounded well in the petites and made a big push to walk through Dayton, who beat them solidly in the heats, but fell just short in an exciting race.
The 2V8 once again had a very strong showing. In their heats, they cruised to a first-place finish and a spot in the grand finals. In the finals, they had a great battle with Jacksonville, who was able to edge past them, giving them second place.
The 1V8 laid down their best race to date during their heat and earned a spot in the petite finals. In the petites, they came out and gave St. Joseph's a hard race, but finished second.
"Both the fours have done a tremendous job improving these past few weeks," WVU assistant coach
Tina Griffith said. "The second four attacks practices like races and races like they mean it. The first four is strong, coachable and makes it happen. It has been fun for both me and them to push their boundaries and see where they can go."
