Scott II Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After etching his name into the Mountaineer record book, junior outfielder Victor Scott II of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Scott II stole four bases in April 16's win over No. 3 Oklahoma State, shooting him up to No. 1 in single-season program history in the category, with 30. Earlier in the week, the Powder Springs, Georgia, native finished a home run short of the cycle in a win at Penn State on April 12.

For the week, Scott II finished with two extra-base hits in four games, stole five total bases and drove in three. He ranks No. 2 nationally in stolen bases this season and leads the team with 33 RBI on the year.

WVU is set to play four road games this week, beginning on Tuesday, April 19, against rival Pitt at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

This Week in Baseball: West Virginia plays four games on the road, beginning on Tuesday, April 19, against Pitt at PNC Park in Pittsburgh … first pitch at the home of MLB's Pittsburgh Pirates is set for 6 p.m. ET … from there, the Mountaineers embark on a trip to Lubbock, Texas, for a three-game series at Texas Tech … Friday's opener is slated for 7:30 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's games will begin at 3 p.m., and 2 p.m., respectively.

Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers (22-12, 6-3 Big 12) went 2-2 in four games … first, the squad earned an 8-4 win at Penn State on April 12, in University Park, Pennsylvania … junior outfielder Victor Scott II finished a home run short of the cycle in the win, while senior outfielder Austin Davis went 3-for-5 on the night … then, WVU dropped a hard-fought series against No. 3 Oklahoma State from April 15-17, at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown … the Mountaineers fell in the series opener, 2-1, bounced back for a 5-2 win in the middle game and dropped a 13-3 decision in the series finale … junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Watters was a tough-luck loser on Friday night … the Rocky Gap, Virginia, native logged a career-long 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs with eight strikeouts, which matched his career high … Scott II stole four bases in Saturday's win and shot up to No. 1 in WVU's single-season record book in the category … on the mound, sophomore left-hander Ben Hampton earned the win on Saturday, his Big 12-leading sixth of the year … sophomore infielder Nathan Blasick homered on Saturday and Sunday and finished with three RBI on the weekend … sophomore catcher McGwire Holbrook hit .385 (5-for-13) with a double, home run and six RBI in the club's four games.

Notes: Following the OSU series, WVU is now 11-3 at home this season and 5-3 against ranked opponents … WVU is set to play at PNC Park for the fourth time since 2017 … the squad is 3-0 at the park … WVU and Pitt have already met once this season, a 9-6 Panther win on March 30, at Cost Field in Pittsburgh … overall, WVU is 110-93 against its Backyard Brawl rival … WVU has played Pitt more than any other team in program history … the Mountaineers also are 15-15 against Texas Tech … West Virginia hasn't played a game in Lubbock since March 31, 2018 … a total of 3,291 fans attended Friday's game against Oklahoma State, good for the seventh-largest crowd in Monongalia County Ballpark history … WVU has 115 stolen bases this season, the most in single-season program history … West Virginia ranks No. 2 in the nation in stolen bases … individually, Scott II's 30 stolen bases also rank No. 2 nationally … Davis was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on April 11, WVU's first player to earn the recognition since Darius Hill in 2019 … the Orlando, Florida, native responded with a 6-for-15 (.400) week at the plate with four stolen bases and four runs scored.

This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers travel to Fort Worth, Texas, for the 2022 Big 12 Championship on Thursday, April 21 ... TCU is set to host this year's conference championship, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center ... competition will run through Sunday, April 24 ... start times and brackets will be released in the coming days.

Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia (7-16, 0-9 Big 12) fell, 6-1, to No. 30 Iowa State, on April 17, to conclude its 2022 regular season in Ames, Iowa ... WVU dropped the doubles point, as ISU began its 6-0 run ... No. 73-ranked pair of freshman Camilla Bossi and junior Ting-Pei Chang came up short, 6-4, to Christin Hsieh and Thasaporn Naklo in doubles ... the remaining two pairs fell, 6-2, to the Cyclones, giving Iowa Step a one-up going into singles play ... freshman Tatiana Lipatova was the lone victory for the Mountaineers ... the freshman came up short, 6-4, in the first set, but battled back, 6-5, in the second against Sofia Cabezas ... Lipatova took the match against Cabezas by retirement in the second set.

Notes: Bossi currently leads the team with a 13-7 overall singles record, while Lipatova sits behind with a 12-8 record … as a pair, Bossi and Chang have a doubles record of 9-8 and were ranked No. 73 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) doubles-rankings on April 13.

This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia returns home for the Mountaineer Showcase on April 22-23 at The Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia … Friday's action is tabbed for 5:30 p.m. ET., while Saturday's events are set to begin at 10 a.m.

Last Week in Track and Field: WVU completed action at the Bison Outdoor Classic with six top-five individual finishes in seven events … the meet took place on April 15-16, at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania … on the track, sophomore Maria Kaylor placed second in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 10:08.05 … redshirt senior Hayley Jackson took fourth (4:25.16) in the 1,500-meter run …sophomores Jo-Lauren Keane (2:08.29) and Cassandra Williamson (2:08.82) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 800-meter run … redshirt junior Malina Mitchell placed fifth (5:18.04) in the mile run … senior Sada Wright placed fifth in the discus competition ... Wright threw a distance of 45.94 meters.

Notes: The Mountaineers are set to host their third of four outdoor meets this season ... WVU last hosted the Mountaineer Showcase on April 26-27, 2019, which was the team's second home meet of the outdoor season at the new facility, which officially opened in October 2018 … West Virginia enjoyed victories by then-redshirt senior Bria Welker in the 100 meters and then-redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson in the 1,500 meters on day one of competition ... Welker opened day two with a win in the 400 meters in a time of 57.67 before then-redshirt junior Olivia Hill won the 3,000 meters in 9:59.61 … later, then-freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie placed first in the 200 meters in 25.75, ahead of Welker, who finished second (26.02) … in the field, then-redshirt senior Madelin Gardner continued her dominance in the pole vault … in an event that was moved to the WVU Shell Building due to wind conditions, Gardner registered a mark of 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5.25 inches) in her victory …. the win was Gardner's fourth straight in the event.

This Week in Golf: The Mountaineers are off and return to action on April 25-27 at the Big 12 Championship in Trinity, Texas.

Last Week in Golf: West Virginia was idle.

Notes: Three Mountaineers are ranked inside the top 140 in the latest PGA TOUR University rankings – Mark Goetz is 24th, Logan Perkins is 118th and Kurtis Grant is 140th.

This Week in Rowing: West Virginia travels to Fairfax Station, Virginia, for the George Mason Invitational on Sunday, April 24.

Last Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers held their annual intersquad Gold-Blue Regatta on April 15, in Morgantown, West Virginia ... the Blue Squad won four-of-five rowing events, capturing Friday's race on the Monongahela River, 277-156, posting the winning score for the second straight year ... the first event of the day began on the Erg Deck with a 2k erg competion, from which the Blue Squad emerged with 160 points and a 50-point lead over the Gold Squad ... however, in the year-long competition, the Gold Squad leads, 3783-3597.
