Quinerly Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.After being selected to the 2022 Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team, sophomore guard JJ Quinerly of the West Virginia University women's basketball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
Quinerly averaged a team-high 13 points per game across two games in Cancun, while shooting 48% from the field. She also led the team in rebounding (5.5 per game) and assists (3.0 per game).
 
Against Central Michigan, the sophomore guard tallied 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Quinerly also shot 44% from the floor against the Chippewas and made a 3-pointer.
 
In the finale against No. 13/11 NC State, Quinerly tallied a team-high 16 points, while shooting 8-of-16 (50%) from the field. Additionally, she hauled in five rebounds and notched a pair of steals against the Wolfpack.
 
This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers travel to challenge defending Big 12 champion and No. 6-ranked Missouri on Friday, Dec. 2, at 6:30 p.m. ET … this marks the first matchup between the two programs since 2006, as well as WVU's first visit to Columbia, Missouri.

Notes: West Virginia earned 13 votes in the latest NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches poll … two Mountaineers remain undefeated … junior Peyton Hall stands at 10-0, while freshman Brody Conley stands at 8-0 to begin his first season in the Gold and Blue … WVU had six Mountaineers remain steady in the national rankings, provided by Flowrestling … wrestlers included were No. 7 Killian Cardinale (125), No. 22 Sam Hillegas (149), No. 7 Hall (165), Honorable Mentions Anthony Carman (184) and Austin Cooley (197), and No. 19 Michael Wolfgram (HWT) … this is the first season since 2012 the program has had six wrestlers ranked nationally at the same time, when No. 23 Shane Young (125), No. 25 Nathan Pennesi (133), No. 29 Michael Morales (144), No. 21 Lance Bryson (174), No. 16 Matt Ryan (184) and No. 17 Brandon Williamson (HWT) made the list ahead of the postseason (EWL and NCAAs).
 
This Week in Volleyball: The West Virginia University volleyball team's season has concluded.
 
Last Week in Volleyball: WVU (7-22, 0-16 Big 12) wrapped up the 2022 campaign when it faced off against No. 1 Texas on Nov. 23, at the WVU Coliseum … it was Senior Day at the Coliseum, as the team honored fifth-year senior outside hitter Adrian Ell and senior defensive specialist Natalie Winter for their accomplishments as student-athletes … Ell notched eight kills to lead West Virginia on Senior Day and added six assists and one block for the match … junior libero Skye Stokes led West Virginia with eight digs, while redshirt freshman Kamiah Gibson racked up 14 assists to lead WVU … the Mountaineers fell in the third set.
 
Notes: Freshman outside hitter Bailey Miller led West Virginia on the season with 293 kills, while Ell followed behind her with 290 … Stokes paced WVU with 369 digs on the campaign and finished fifth in the Big 12 Conference with 3.80 digs per set … the Chester, West Virginia, native also earned seventh in the conference in service aces per set (0.32) … Gibson put up 640 assists throughout the year for WVU and garnered eighth in the Big 12 with 6.09 assists per set … the Mountaineers rank second in the Big 12 in opponent kills per set (11.59) and opponent assists per set (10.83) … West Virginia concluded the season ninth in the conference.
 
This Week in Swimming & Diving: The Mountaineers are off this week ... WVU returns to action on Nov. 30-Dec. 3 as it sends 15 Mountaineers to the 2022 Toyota U.S. Open in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Notes: At the WVU Invitational from Nov. 17-19, the women's squad combined for 25 top-ten performances in program history, 37 lifetime-best times and 26 unrested best times ... the men combined for eight top-ten performances in program history, 32 lifetime-best times and 32 unrested best times ... after their performances at the WVU Invite, sophomore Miranda Kirtley was named the Women's Swimmer of the Week and freshmen Max Nielsen and Mia Cheatwood were named the Men's and Women's Newcomers of the Week, respectively … Cheatwood's honor is her second of the season, while Kirtley and Nielsen garnered the first accolades of their careers … WVU has three divers that have qualified for NCAA Zones, including seniors Owen Johns (1-meter, 3-meter) Marian Tiemeier (1-meter) and sophomore Glenn Eloriaga (platform) ... following the U.S. Open, the Mountaineers ring in the new year in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the Backyard Brawl on Jan. 14.
 
This Week in Women's Basketball: WVU (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) returns to Morgantown for a pair of games … the Mountaineers begin the week on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when they play host to NC Central … tipoff against the Eagles is set for 7 p.m. ET … West Virginia closes out the week on Saturday, Dec. 3, when it welcomes Delaware State … tipoff against the Hornets is set for 2 p.m. … both games will be played inside the WVU Coliseum … additionally, each game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now and the Mountaineer Sports Network.
 
Last Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia traveled to the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Cancun, Mexico, for a pair of games at the 2022 Cancun Challenge … WVU opened the event with a 64-33 win over Central Michigan on Nov. 24, before falling to No. 13/11 NC State, 78-40, on Nov. 25 … sophomore guard JJ Quinerly averaged a team-high 13 points per game in Cancun, while shooting 48% from the field during the event … Quinerly also led the team in rebounding at the event with 5.5 boards per game … at the end of the tournament, the Norfolk, Virginia, native represented WVU on the 2022 Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team.
 
Notes: West Virginia is 3-0 all-time against NC Central and 4-1 against Delaware State … the Mountaineers and Eagles last met on Nov. 20, 2011 – a 97-24 WVU win in Morgantown … in the last matchup between WVU and DSU, the Mountaineers defeated the Hornets, 77-34, on Nov. 14, 2015, in Morgantown … fifth-year senior guard Madisen Smith is averaging a team-high 12.4 points per game this season and has finished in double digits in all five games in 2022-23 … the Greenville, South Carolina, native has 947 career points and needs 53 to reach 1,000 … she would be the 39th 1,000-point scorer in program history … Quinerly also is averaging double figures this year at 11.4 points per game … redshirt sophomore guard Kyah Watson is pacing WVU in rebounding, with six boards per game … the Rapid City, South Dakota, native has led the Mountaineers on the glass in two of five games this year.

Notes: Redshirt junior Ceili McCabe has been named the Big 12 Conference Women's Runner of the Year and the Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year … she has earned both awards for the second consecutive year … McCabe became the first Mountaineer to win the Big 12 Conference Individual Title and be named the Big 12 Women's Runner of the Year, and she is the only WVU runner to do it twice … additionally, the Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native is the first Mountaineer to take the Individual Regional Title twice, and she is the first West Virginia runner to do so since 2002, when WVU Sports Hall of Famer Megan Metcalfe secured the award for WVU.
