MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team opened the fall portion of its schedule at the Head of the Ohio Regatta on Saturday, October 1, racing on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, hosted by the Three Rivers Rowing Association.
The course was on the Allegheny River, beginning upstream from downtown Pittsburgh at Washington's Landing and ended 2.6 miles downstream at Point State Park. All boats launch and returned to Lambert Boathouse on Washington's Landing or Millvale Training Center in Millvale Riverfront Park.
The Mountaineers had a winning lineup in each event, the 4+ and the 8+. The winning 4+ lineup of Lydia Nicolai, Kaira Lay, Kathleen Meldrum, Anna Gall with Emily DeGlopper (Coxswain) also were members of the winning 8+ lineup for the Mountaineers, along with Abigail Yingling, Ashlea Clark, Laurna Atkins, Violet Hewett and Sydney VanAuken (Coxswain).
The winning lineups for each boat and results are provided below.
"A positive standout to me was the overall demeanor of the portion of our team racing in Pittsburgh today. They were outside for over six hours in frequent downpours, always on their feet if not in the boat racing, yet the mood was light and unbothered," WVU coach Jimmy King said. "We talk often about attitude, and I thought the attitude was quite good. The not-so-good are the time margins among our crews in the 8s and in the 4s. We'll work to narrow those margins by the time we race at the Occoquan (Nov. 4)."
