
Mountaineers Recognized on SoCon Anniversary Teams

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sixteen West Virginia University athletes were recognized on the Southern Conference 100thAnniversary Teams announced this morning. The league is revealing its anniversary teams to conclude its centennial celebration.
Among the criteria to be recognized for the SoCon Anniversary teams an athlete must
* Be a member of the collegiate hall of fame for that sport
* Be a member of the Southern Conference hall of fame
* Be named National Player of the Year
* Have earned All-America honors in two different academic years
* Be named SoCon Male or Female Athlete of the Year
* Be named SoCon Player of the Year multiple times
* Be a multiple SoCon individual champion
* Have earned First team All-SoCon three times
WVU competed in the Southern Conference from 1950-68 with men's basketball headlining the league in the late 1950s and early 1960s behind the play of All-Americans Rod Hundley, Jerry West and Rod Thorn. Center Mark Workman was also recognized, as was guard Ron "Fritz" Williams, named Southern Conference Male Athlete of the Year in 1968.
Football had three honorees - College Football Hall of Famers Sam Huff and Bruce Bosley and three-time All-Southern Conference quarterback Fred Wyant.

John Writer, NCAA smallbore champion 1966; All-America 1964, 1965 and 1966; SoCon champion 1965 and 1966

Russell Thoburn, 1st team All-SoCon 1950, 1952, 1953 and 1954
Don Sweeney, 1st team All-SoCon 1962, 1963 and 1964
Wrestling
Bobby Perry, 1st team All-SoCon 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1955; SoCon champion 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1955

Dave Tork, ITK pole vault champion 1956, 1957 and 1958
