Wolf Named WVU Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After tying his career high with 11 strikeouts in Friday's win against Oklahoma, senior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
Wolf was dominant in the series-opening win over the Sooners on May 7. He allowed just three hits, one unearned run and one walk on 117 pitches, including 80 strikeouts. The Gahanna, Ohio, native retired 10 in a row at one point from the fourth to seventh innings.
 
Additionally, Wolf became the first Mountaineer pitcher to register 10 or more strikeouts in three consecutive starts since Alek Manoah from April 5-20, 2019. On the season, the Mountaineer southpaw is 4-5 with a 3.31 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 68.0 innings of work. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight of his 11 starts this spring.
 
This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers head to the Big 12 Championship on Sunday, May 16, in Austin, Texas.

Notes: This year's senior recognition awards were given to Ruth MierzejewskiAmanda StarliperJordan Wittmaack and Jessica Woy … the Flame Award was given to junior Emma Toy and sophomore Madison Lindung of the varsity squad, and the first-year award was given to freshman Ashlea Clark … this marks the second year Toy has been named for the award … the winners of this year's Hammer Award were senior Allyson George of the varsity squad and Clark  … this marks the third year that George has earned the award … the recipients of this year's Most Improved Award were junior Gabrielle Riggleman from the varsity squad, and freshman Laurna Atkins … this year's recipients of the MVP Award were Toy of the varsity squad and freshman Emily DeGlopper, who was selected as the first-year award winner.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers continue their outdoor season at the Big 12 Championship, from May 14-16 … the Championship will be hosted by Kansas State, at the R.V. Christian Complex, in Manhattan, Kansas. 
 
Last Week in Track and Field: WVU closed out competition at the WVU Last Chance meet with eight first-place finishes in eight events at the Track and Field Complex, at Mylan Park, on Saturday … overall, WVU competed in nine events this weekend … redshirt freshman Sarah Stair won the pole vault competition with a height of 3.66m, while junior Sada Wright won the discus throw competition with a distance of 43.36 meters … freshman Emily Oiler took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.00, while freshman Macey Crawford finished the 400-meter hurdles with a winning time 1:05.11 … freshman Lilly McMullen ran in the 200-meter dash with a winning time 27.08 … she was followed by redshirt junior Hayley Jackson, who won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.68 … to wrap up the Mountaineers wins, redshirt senior Candace Archer won the 1,500-meter run (4:27.97), while redshirt senior Antigone Archer won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:56.60.
 
Notes: The Mountaineers have not seen action at the Big 12 Championship since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic … WVU last won a Big 12 individual championship in 2015, when Kaitlyn Gillespie won the 10,000 meters in 33:45.56 … entering the meet, three Mountaineers rank in the top 10 of the Big 12 in their respective events redshirt freshman Ceili McCabe ranks No. 1 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a school-record time of 9:58.62 and junior Katherine Dowie follows at No. 3 in the conference with a time of 10:15.75 … additionally, McCabe holds a No. 4 rank in the 1,500- meter run with a time of 4:19 and she is followed by redshirt junior Hayley Jackson who ranks No. 7 (4:21.92).
 
This Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers play four games at home this week … on Tuesday, WVU welcomes in-state foe Marshall to Morgantown for a 6:30 p.m. ET, start at Monongalia County Ballpark … from there, West Virginia battles Miami (Ohio) in a three-game, weekend series from May 14-16 … Friday's series opener is set for 6:30 p.m., while Saturday's game is scheduled for 4 p.m. … Sunday's series finale begins at 1 p.m. 
 
Last Week in Baseball: WVU (17-23, 7-14 Big 12) went 2-2 last week … the Mountaineers took down No. 16 Pitt, 8-2, on May 5, in Morgantown, before the club dropped two-of-three games to Oklahoma, from May 7-8, at home … WVU topped the Sooners, 7-1, in the series opener but fell in both games of a doubleheader, 8-7 in 11 innings and 9-1 … freshman right-handed pitcher Carlson Reed earned the win over the Panthers after tossing a career-high, 5.2 innings of work … the Marietta, Georgia, native allowed just one run on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk … senior infielder Tyler Doanes and freshman infielder/right-handed pitcher Nathan Blasick each tallied three hits in the win, while senior catcher/outfielder Paul McIntosh recorded three RBI … senior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf got the Mountaineers going in the OU series, tying his career high with 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings … Wolf yielded just one unearned run on three hits and a walk, earning the win on the mound … the Gahanna, Ohio, native retired 10 in a row at one point from the fourth to seventh innings … on Saturday, junior right-hander Madison Jeffrey and freshman left-hander Ben Hampton took losses on the mound … at the plate, McIntosh led the squad by finishing 4-for-11 (.364) with a homer, two doubles and two RBI in the Oklahoma series.
 
Notes: West Virginia is 49-25 all-time against Marshall with wins in 10 of the last 12 meetings … the two teams have already met twice this season, a 7-1 MU win on March 23, in Huntington, as well as a 9-3 Mountaineer triumph on April 14, in Morgantown … WVU has won 18 consecutive midweek, home games, dating back to April 3, 2017 … of note, the Thundering Herd haven't won a game in Morgantown since April 9, 1991 … WVU and Miami (Ohio) have met just once prior to this weekend … the series will mark the first time the two clubs will play since 2011 … Saturday's contest is Senior Day, as the Mountaineers will honor five senior student-athletes … with his 11 strikeouts on Friday, Wolf became the first Mountaineer pitcher to register 10 or more strikeouts in three consecutive starts since Alek Manoah from April 5-20, 2019 … Blasick hit an inside-the-park home run on Friday night, the first Mountaineer to do so since Doanes did it on May 13, 2018, against TCU … redshirt sophomore infielder/outfielder Alec Burns hit a pair of home runs in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader, including a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the contest into extra innings … the Amherst, New Hampshire, native is the second WVU player to leave the yard twice in one game this season, joining fifth-year senior infielder Kevin Brophy (Feb. 28, vs. Bryant) … junior outfielder Austin Davis, who hit his first career homer on Saturday against Oklahoma, paces West Virginia at the plate with a .292 average this spring … he has posted 12 hits in his last seven games.
 
This Week in Golf: Mark Goetz continues preparation for the NCAA Golf Regional in Noblesville, Indiana, from May 17-19. The native of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, becomes the first NCAA individual qualifier in school history.
