MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In January, the Mountaineer Athletic Club announced a new Time 2 Climb initiative aimed at turning Mountaineer fans into Mountaineer supporters.
Since West Virginia joined the Big 12 Conference in 2012, the Mountaineer Athletic Club's participation levels have been lagging behind its Big 12 peers, despite total dollars raised ranking ahead of TCU and Iowa State as of 2019.
Those same 2019 figures show athletic donors in the Mountaineer Athletic Club at just 4,162, or nearly 1,000 donors fewer than Kansas and more than 14,000 fewer than Texas' 18,697.

WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons wants to take West Virginia University's athletics to another level, and in order to do so, he needs the help and support of everyone.
Lyons said in January if just 2% of the households in West Virginia contribute to the Time 2 Climb campaign, which is only $21 per month or $252 per year, that would equate to nearly $4 million in additional revenue to support West Virginia University's hard working and deserving student-athletes and coaches.
"My goal is to raise our membership number to 12, 15 or even 18,000," Lyons said in January, "and I know Mountaineer Nation is willing to respond. We were considering a Time 2 Climb campaign even before the pandemic hit last spring, and now, more than ever, we need Mountaineer Nation to help us move our department forward."
Since the announcement of the Time 2 Climb campaign, nearly 750 people have become involved, including 542 first-time supporters of the Mountaineer Athletic Club, according to Eric Buda, WVU's assistant athletics director for annual giving.
Nearly 200 of those have pledged amounts more than $21 per month, and the total dollar amount generated though this campaign so far is approaching $225,000.
"People have been very supportive, going back to when this was launched on Jan. 1," Buda said. "We've had great response to this on social media, and we want to thank everyone who has participated so far. This is an affordable way to support our very deserving student-athletes and coaches and help us continue to grow our membership and general MAC scholarship fund."
Earlier this month, the MAC announced a Matching Gift Challenge with the goal of attaining 100 new members to the Time 2 Climb campaign prior to Saturday's Gold-Blue Spring Game to unlock a $25,000 gift made by an anonymous donor.
