MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For years, the Mountaineer Athletic Club has been taking West Virginia University athletics on the road by sponsoring coaches caravan events around the state.
It's an opportunity for WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons, his head coaches and key staff members to interact with the fanbase. In fundraising parlance it's called "friendraising."
Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down the country last spring also wiped out the caravan events the MAC had planned. But this year, the coaches caravan is returning as one virtual event scheduled for Tuesday, May 11 at 6 p.m.
The two-hour affair is sponsored by United Bank.
Jamie Hall, assistant athletics director for donor relations and administration for the Mountaineer Athletic Club, said the coaches caravan typically covers five different locations throughout the state.
"We're disappointed we can't get around and see everybody, but we're excited to engage people all over the country and potentially all over the world with this year's virtual format," Hall said.
Hall mentioned the MAC has room for 250 spots for this year's virtual caravan and they will accept registrants until all of the available spots are occupied.
"Right now, we have nearly 100 people registered, and we understand the event is still about a month and a half out, but hopefully we'll sell out all 250 spots soon," she said.
Coaches caravans normally cost $50 to attend, but Hall said this year's virtual caravan is priced at $30 and anyone in the family who can get in front of a computer screen is welcomed to watch.
This year's format will resemble a typical coaches caravan with team highlight videos and veteran Mountaineer Sports Network play-by-play man Tony Caridi serving as master of ceremonies.
Coaches will give a quick recap of their seasons and preview their upcoming campaigns.
"All of our head coaches will be on, and Mountaineer fans will have opportunities to ask questions," Hall said. "We're hoping to make this event as interactive and engaging as possible."
Mountaineer fans can register for the virtual coaches caravan by logging on to wvumac.com/events! After registering, fans will receive instructions on how to access the virtual meeting.
A live auction will once again accompany this year's virtual caravan, and bidding is available now through the LiveSource app. You can log on to desktop.livesourceapp.com and scroll down to Morgantown, WV to view the MAC's current auctions.
