MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia, up three spots to No. 10 in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll, continues its tour of Texas with a Tuesday night game at TCU.
The Horned Frogs (11-9, 4-7) are coming off a 62-54 loss to Kansas State last Saturday at Schollmaier Arena. The Wildcats outscored TCU 33-25 in the second half to win just their second Big 12 game this season.
Mike McGuirl was K-State's top point man with 16.
R.J. Nembhard led TCU with 14 points, but connected on just three of his 11 field goal attempts. Nembhard, a 6-5 junior guard, is TCU's top scorer averaging 16.8 points per game.
Nembhard is at or near the top of almost every statistical category for the Horned Frogs, including turnovers with 62.
"I think the thing we've got to be prepared for is how hard he runs the floor," West Virginia coach
Bob Huggins said. "He really runs the floor, which kind of stretches everything out and gives the other guys a little more space to penetrate and kick. They're big penetrate-and-kick guys."
Mike Miles, a 6-2 freshman guard, is also averaging double figures at 14.5 points per game. The Lancaster, Texas, resident contributed 13 in the K-State loss and also struggled from the field, hitting on just three of his 13 field goal attempts.
"Their youth is one thing that jumps out at me," Huggins said Monday afternoon. "They've been in a lot of close games and you'd rather have veterans than young guys.
"They're a bit streaky, but their young guys can really get it going and when they get it going they just spread you so far that they're hard to guard," Huggins added.
TCU once again has a formidable presence in the paint this year with junior forward Kevin Samuel, a 6-11, 255-pounder from Codrington Village, Barbuda. Samuel is pulling down a team-best 8.5 rebounds while contributing 9.1 points per contest. He has also blocked a team-best 39 shots.
"Samuel has been really good for them," Huggins said. "You have to attack a shot blocker and the best way is to get contact with him. When you get contact with him you kind of keep him grounded and the worst thing to do is give them space to where they can use that to get a step and jump."
The Mountaineers, coming off an impressive 84-82 come-from-behind win at Texas last Saturday, is looking to keep pace with Oklahoma and Kansas near the top of the Big 12 standings.
The Sooners are currently in second place with a 9-4 record, .06 percentage points better than 11-5 Kansas in third place. West Virginia currently sits in fourth place at 8-4, .21 percentage points below the Jayhawks.
Undefeated Baylor continues to lead the Big 12 with a 9-0 league mark. The Bears are scheduled to resume league play on Tuesday night against Iowa State.
Sophomore guard Deuce McBride led five double-figure West Virginia scorers with 17 in the Mountaineers' win at Texas on Saturday.
Guard
Sean McNeil scored all 16 of his points during a second half to help WVU overcome a 19-point deficit. He was five-of-seven from the floor, including three-of-five from 3-point distance.
McBride (16.2 ppg.) is one of four players currently averaging double figures. The others are
Derek Culver (15.0 ppg.),
Taz Sherman (12.7 ppg.) and McNeil (11.8 ppg.)
West Virginia used a starting lineup consisting of Culver, freshman
Jalen Bridges and junior
Emmitt Matthews Jr. up front, with McBride and McNeil in the backcourt against Texas.
TCU's starting five against K-State featured Nembhard, Miles and P.J. Fuller in the backcourt, Samuel at center, and junior Charles O'Bannon Jr. at forward.
"They've got really good size on the perimeter," Huggins said.
West Virginia, hunting for its sixth straight Big 12 road victory, holds a 14-3 advantage in all-time series play against TCU, but has lost its last three to the Horned Frogs in Ft. Worth.
The last WVU win at Schollmaier Arena came on Feb. 27, 2017, a 61-60 decision.
Tuesday night's game will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN2 (Kevin Connors and Chris Spatola). Mountaineer Sports Network from Learfield IMG radio coverage on affiliates throughout West Virginia and online via WVUsports.com and the popular mobile app WVU Gameday begins at 6 p.m.
Following Tuesday's game, WVU will conclude its three-game, six-day tour of Texas with a Thursday game against Baylor. No tip time has been officially revealed for that contest yet.
