West Virginia Opens Spring vs. Cleveland State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team begins its spring 2021 season on Friday, Feb. 19, as the Mountaineers welcome Cleveland State to Morgantown.
First serve from the Summit Tennis Academy, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, is now set for 12 p.m. Live stats for tomorrow's match will be available on WVUsports.com. Due to ongoing COVID-19 health and safety protocols, fans will not be permitted to attend home matches at the Summit Tennis Academy or the Mountaineer Tennis Courts this season.
"We are very excited to be starting the spring season against Cleveland State at home," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "I cannot tell you how excited I am going to be to be back on the court and actually competing."
WVU and Cleveland State are set to meet for the third time since 2016 on Friday afternoon. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series, 2-0. West Virginia last competed against Cleveland State in the spring of 2019, defeating the Vikings, 5-2, in Morgantown.
Cleveland State enters Friday's contest with a record of 0-3. CSU's three-match skid includes losses to Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH) and Toledo.
West Virginia is coming off a 7-3 campaign a season ago. In the spring, senior Anne-Sophie Courteau led all returners with a singles record of 5-3 and a doubles record of 5-4. Junior Nicole Roc also record five wins a year ago and went a team-best 2-1 in Big 12 singles play.
During fall 2020, members of the tennis team competed in the 2020 Fall Circuit, presented by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), from Oct. 23-25 at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown. Freshman Momoko Nagato led the way for the Mountaineers, posting three wins and making an appearance in the tournament final of the women's main draw. Nagato finished second after falling in two sets to Taylor Ng, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7). Courteau and freshman Amber Fuller also competed in the Fall Circuit event and each picked up two wins to make it to the quarterfinals.
