Mountaineers Finish Day One in Florida

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team opened its spring season today at the Florida Gators Invitational, held at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Florida.
Each Mountaineer golfer completed at least 30 holes of the 54-hole event. Teams are scheduled to finish the second round Saturday morning followed immediately by the third round due to inclement weather predicted for the rest of the weekend in Gainesville.
"I am very proud of these guys," golf coach Sean Covich said. "We are competing against some of the best teams in the country and getting great experience for the future. I saw a lot of good golf from our guys today. I couldn't be prouder of their attitude and the way they played. There is still a lot of golf still to be played, but I've been impressed with this group."
In round one of competition, the Mountaineers shot even par after the first 18 holes. Junior Kurtis Grant shot a 2-under-par 68 to pace WVU in the first round. The Herndon, Virginia, native finished the day at 1-over-par after 30 holes.
Senior Logan Perkins (Locust Grove, Ga.), sophomore Trent Tipton (Orient, Ohio) and freshman Jackson Davenport (Austin, Texas) all posted 1-over-par rounds of 71 in the first round. After 30 holes, Davenport and Tipton remain at 1-over-par, while Perkins stands at 2-over-par after 33 holes of play heading into Saturday.
Senior Mark Goetz (Greensburg, Pa.) shot even par in the first round and finished the day at 3-over-par after 30 holes.
After Friday's play, the Mountaineers are in 18th place at 4-over-par.
The final day of play will begin Saturday morning in Gainesville.
