The Mountaineers Drop Game Two Over No. 1 Texas

Box Score MORGANTOWN, W. Va.  The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to No. 1 Texas in match two of the weekend series. The Mountaineers suffered a 3-0 loss on Friday evening, at Gregory Stadium, in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns (11-0) took the match from the Mountaineers (12-3) in set scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-21.

"We have to learn from this weekend, and we need to continue to get better," said coach Reed Sunahara. "I thought we played better in the third set. We need to build on that. Texas is very good, and they have a lot of weapons."

Senior setter Lacey Zerwas finished the match adding another double-double to the season. Zerwas recorded a team-high 30 assists and 12 digs.
 
Fifth-year senior outside hitter Adrian Ell led the team with nine kills on the night, while fifth-year senior outside hitter Athena Ardila and senior outside hitter Natali Petrova each tallied eight kills. Petrova also tallied seven digs.

WVU finished the match hitting .178 with 36 kills and 42 digs.

The Mountaineers began action in set one with a pair of kills, but the Longhorns responded with a pair of their own. UT then went on a 4-0 scoring run to take the lead, 6-3. A Longhorn service error ended the Texas scoring run, but they continued to score on West Virginia. The Mountaineer's called an early timeout with the Longhorns leading, 9-4. Following the timeout, WVU tallied a kill, and then the teams traded a few points. Texas went on a few short runs to ultimately take set one, 25-16.
 
Texas opened set two with a 2-0 run, but Ardila answered back with a kill. The teams then traded points until Texas broke the streak and took the lead, 8-5. WVU cut UT's lead to one with a score of, 9-8. The set reached a media timeout with UT leading 15-11. West Virginia came back with a kill, and the teams alternated points. Another few scoring runs helped extend the Texas lead. The Mountaineers could not gain enough power to catch the Longhorns and fell in set two, 25-17.
 
UT opened the third set with a pair of points, but a Longhorn attack error gave a point to the Mountaineers. The teams followed with trade points. WVU went on a 3-0 scoring run with a kill from junior middle blocker Emmy Ogogor and a pair of service aces from Zerwas to tie the set, 5-5. Texas went on a 4-0 scoring run of its own to take the lead, 10-7. The Mountaineers came within one point of the Longhorns who were up 12-11. Texas then went up 17-14. With UT at set point and a score of 18-24, WVU went on a 3-0 scoring run to make the score 24-21. The Mountaineers fought hard but could not overcome the Longhorns, who took the third set 25-21.

The Mountaineers are off next week. Following the break, the squad travels to Kansas for a two-match series against Kansas State, at Ahearn Field House, from Oct. 14-15. Thursday's match will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by Friday's match at 8 p.m.
