MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Another senior has announced he plans to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Safety Sean Mahone becomes the fourth West Virginia University player to do so by making the announcement on his Instagram account late Thursday afternoon.
A starting safety in 2020, Mahone ranked fifth on the team in tackles with 54 while also making four pass breakups and a pair of tackles for losses.
In 42 career games, the Liberty Township, Ohio, resident has generated 143 tackles, seven tackles for loss, six pass breakups, four interceptions and a pair of sacks.
"This past year was unique, and I am so thankful that we were able to have a season; but there was so much more I wanted to accomplish! Fortunately, the NCAA has allowed an extra year of eligibility and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to play another season of WVU football," he wrote.
The return of Mahone gives West Virginia nine returning starters from last year's defense that ranked fourth in the country in total defense allowed just 291.4 yards per game.
The other seniors that have announced previously they are using their extra year of eligibility are Jeffrey Pooler Jr., Evan Staley and Alonzo Addae.
"We still have some unfinished business, Mountaineer Nation. Let's get it done in 2021!" Mahone wrote.
