MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Opening day for Major League Baseball was Thursday night, but the bulk of the games are taking place this evening.
Six former West Virginia University players are on 60-man rosters under the adjusted roster rules following the cancellation of Minor League Baseball in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The six players are infielder Jedd Gyroko (Milwaukee), utility player Ryan McBroom (Kansas City), reliever David Carpenter (Cincinnati), righthanded pitcher Michael Grove (Los Angeles), righthanded pitcher
Alek Manoah (Toronto) and lefthanded pitcher John Means (Baltimore).
Gyorko and McBroom are on opening day rosters tonight while Means was recently placed on the 10-day injured list. The other three were moved to their organization's respective training sites.
The six on 60-man player pools put West Virginia tied with Florida State, Maryland and Missouri for 36
th among NCAA programs, according to NCAA.com.
Florida has the most with 19 followed by Virginia with 17, Cal State Fullerton, LSU and Vanderbilt with 16 each.
Oklahoma, TCU and Texas have the most among Big 12 programs with 10 each.
Overall, Big 12 baseball has 58 former players on opening day rosters, fourth only to the SEC (151), the ACC (101) and the Pac-12 (81).
