MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University's Darius Stills continues to receive preseason accolades.
Phil Steele Magazine listed the senior defensive lineman on its Preseason Defensive All-American Third Team, it announced today.
Stills had a breakout season in 2019 when he recorded seven sacks, 14 ½ tackles for losses and 47 total tackles in earning All-Big 12 First Team honors. The Fairmont native produced a career-high 10 tackles and three sacks in a 17-14 loss at Baylor last October.
He also broke up a pair of passes and forced a fumble.
Meanwhile, Stills and sophomore wide receiver Sam James were named to Steele's Preseason Big 12 First Team.
James caught a team-best 69 passes for 677 yards and two touchdowns last season with a third of that coming in two games against NC State and Texas Tech.
The Richmond Hill, Georgia, resident caught nine passes for 155 yards and a touchdown in West Virginia's upset victory over the Wolfpack, and produced a career-high 14 receptions for 223 yards in a loss to Texas Tech later in the year.
James was named Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week for his efforts against the Red Raiders.
Three Mountaineer players were listed on Steele's Preseason Big 12 Second Team: senior wide receiver T.J. Simmons, junior defensive lineman Dante Stills and senior safety Sean Mahone.
Emerging sophomore offensive guard James Gmiter and weakside linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo were third team picks, while sophomore safety Tykee Smith was listed on the fourth team.
Smith was named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America team after generating 53 tackles, six pass breakups, 2 ½ tackles for losses, a pair of interceptions and a sack in 12 games last season.
The popular yearly football publication shipped yesterday and is expected to hit newsstands later this week.
