MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 23rd edition of Lindy's National College Football Preview has hit local newsstands.
West Virginia junior running back Leddie Brown is on this year's regional cover along with Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley and North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell.
The magazine picked West Virginia 40th out of 130 teams in Year 2 under coach Neal Brown and listed senior Darius Stills as the fifth-best defensive tackle in the country.
Interestingly enough, No. 1 on the list of top defensive tackles is Florida State senior Marvin Wilson, whose Seminole team will face Stills' Mountaineers in Atlanta to open the season on Sept. 5.
That matchup is one of three "Big Ones" on WVU's schedule this year, according to Lindy's. The others are the Sept. 19 game against regional rival Maryland in Morgantown and the Oct. 17 contest at Texas.
Stills, who generated 14½ tackles for losses and seven sacks in 2019, was the only WVU player listed on Lindy's two preseason All-Big 12 teams this year. The Fairmont resident was also No. 7 on Lindy's list of "Top 10 NFL Talent" with the publication mentioning that the 6-foot-1, 282-pounder is "quick, powerful and uses his hands well to get off blocks."
Overall, Lindy's predicts a seventh-place finish this year for the Mountaineers in the Big 12.
"The Mountaineers return a ton of experience after struggling with a bunch of newcomers in 2019," the magazine wrote in its team overview. "Coach Neal Brown has already shown he can make big strides in rebuilding a program, and West Virginia has the personnel to do the same in 2020. The one catch? West Virginia will face arguably one of the toughest schedules in the country, likely keeping them from reaching nine wins or more."
Regarding Brown's first WVU recruiting efforts, the magazine gave him fairly high marks. West Virginia ranked fourth in the Big 12 and 37th nationally with a 20-player haul that included Maryland four-star prospect David Vincent-Okoli, a top 175 national recruit in 2020.
Three-star quarterback prospect Garrett Greene was also mentioned, as were the state's top two prospects, Sean Martin and Zach Frazier.
Brown said during a Wednesday video call with media that his team will report for regular activities on July 13. A large percentage of players are back on campus now going through voluntary workouts.
