IRVING, Texas – West Virginia University consensus All-American cornerback Aaron Beasley is one of 78 Football Bowl Subdivision players on the 2021 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Former coach Jim Carlen is one of seven coaches on the ballot for the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Beasley earned consensus All-America honors in 1995 one year after leading the country in interceptions with 10 in 1994.
The two-time first team All-Big East choice helped WVU to an undefeated regular season and the 1993 Big East title. His 19 career interceptions were one shy of the Steve Newberry's school record 20 picks established in 1983.
Three of Beasley's picks were returned for touchdowns.
The Pottstown, Pennsylvania, native holds two of the top five single-season pass breakup performances in school history, including a career-high 18 as a senior in 1995.
Beasley was the 63rd overall pick in the 1996 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars and also played with the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons through the 2004 season.
Carlen's WVU tenure was brief, just four years, but his teams got progressively better each season until winning 10 games and defeating South Carolina 14-3 in the 1969 Peach Bowl.
West Virginia finished the year ranked 17th – the first time in 14 years the Mountaineers ended the season in the national rankings.
Carlen also coached at Texas Tech and South Carolina where he accumulated eight total bowl appearances in 13 winning seasons in 16 years as head coach. He was named National Coach of the Year in 1973 and coached running back George Rogers, who won the Heisman Trophy at South Carolina in 1980.
The ballot was emailed today to more than 12,000 National Football Foundation members to begin the election process. The 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be officially inducted during the 64th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 7, 2021, at the New York Hilton Midtown.
Thirteen players and coaches with West Virginia University ties are currently in the College Football Hall of Fame. The most recent to be inducted was coach Frank Cignetti, primarily for his success at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
