MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The final Associated Press men's basketball poll was released on Wednesday and West Virginia finished 24
th.
It's the 19
th time in school history the Mountaineers (21-10) have ended their season in the rankings, dating back to the first poll released on Jan. 20, 1949.
The Associated Press (AP) ranked the 20 best teams in college basketball until 1962 when it pared its poll to just 10 until 1968. It resumed a 20-team ranking system until 1989 when the poll was expanded to its current 25-team format.
The final AP poll is revealed each year before the start of the NCAA Tournament.
It's the fifth time in the last six seasons coach
Bob Huggins' Mountaineers have ended their season in the AP poll, and the seventh overall. Fred Schaus had four teams finish in the AP poll, Gale Catlett three, and John Beilein, George King and Red Brown one each.

Meanwhile, West Virginia also ended its season ranked 24
th in the final USA Today coaches' poll, which is normally revealed at the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament.
This year's NCAA Tournament was canceled due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus.
The coaches poll dates back to the 1950-51 season and was distributed by United Press International (UPI) until 1990. USA Today picked it up in 1991. West Virginia has also concluded its season in the coaches' poll 19 times since 1950.
Seven Huggins teams have been ranked in the final coaches' poll, followed by six from Fred Schaus, two from Gale Catlett and John Beilein, and one each from George King and Red Brown.
