Papineau Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After guiding the golf team to a third-place finish at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational last week, senior Etienne Papineau has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Papineau finished in sixth place to lead West Virginia to a tie for third place at the event.

The senior from St-Jean-Sur-Richlieu, Quebec, Canada, recorded a bogey-free first round to finish even-par at 70 before adding a trio of birdies in the second round to card a 68 for two-under-par on the day. He used five birdies to fire a 65 in the third round, finishing with a program-record 54-hole total of 203 at the tournament. His score bested the previous program record of 206, set in 2017 by Alan Cooke and tied in 2018 by Kurtis Grant.

Papineau's performance helped WVU earn its first-ever top-25 ranking as the Mountaineers came in at No. 25 in the first Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll of the season.

This Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia continues its conference slate with a swing through the Lone Star State, as the Mountaineers take on Baylor on Thursday, Oct. 3, and Texas on Sunday, Oct. 6 … Thursday's match will kick at 8 p.m. ET and will be aired on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, while Sunday's contest is slated to begin at 2 p.m. on the Longhorn Network.

Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU (6-3-1) netted two goals in the first half and the defense recorded its fifth clean sheet of the season to defeat Iowa State 2-0 in the first game of conference play on Sept. 27 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … the Mountaineers took just one shot before finding the back of the net in the ninth minute as senior midfielder Jessica Lisi took a cross from classmate Jade Gentile inside the box and snuck a ball inside the right post to give the Mountaineers an early, 1-0 lead … junior Stefany Ferrar-vanGinkel doubled the Mountaineer lead in the 27th minute as she sent a header into the right side of the net … the WVU defense earned its fifth shutout of the season as senior goalkeeper Rylee Foster registered a season-high six saves against the Cyclones.

Notes: Foster moved into a tie with Lana Bannerman (2003-06) on the career shutouts list at WVU after registering the 36th clean sheet of her career … Foster also moved into second on the career shutouts list among active Division I players with the performance … She leads the Big 12 with five shutouts this season ... The Mountaineers now show five clean sheets on the year … Lisi's game-winner in the ninth minute marked her first at WVU and her second goal of the season … the Mountaineers moved to 7-0-1 in Big 12 conference openers with the win … WVU improved to 8-0-0 all-time against the Iowa State and have denied the Cyclones a goal in seven consecutive matches … West Virginia has outscored ISU 22-2 since the series began in 2012.

This Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers (6-2-1) cap their two-match homestand on Friday, Oct. 4, against San Diego … kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET … Friday's match marks the return of Friday Night Futbol, with half-off drink specials available until kickoff … additionally, the first 300 fans will receive maracas to help cheer on the squad … in celebration of National Taco Day, $2.50 walking tacos will be available at the match.

Last Week in Men's Soccer: WVU won a pair of matches last week … on Sept. 24, the Mountaineers earned a 4-1 win at Ohio State, before returning home to take down Penn 3-0 on Sept. 28 … senior midfielder Andres Muriel Albino led the squad with three goals, including two against the Buckeyes … the Sevilla, Spain, native scored on a penalty kick in the 18th minute, before adding a goal in the 58th … additionally, freshman midfielder Luke McCormick scored his first career goal in the win on sophomore forward Tony Pineda's first WVU assist … Ohio State also conceded an own goal in the match to add to WVU's total … the Mountaineers' win over Penn was highlighted by two goals by freshman forward Rodrigo Robles Grajera, who found the back of the net in the ninth and 68th minute … Muriel Albino finished off the victory with his third goal of the week in the 80th minute … junior goalkeeper Steven Tekesky made five saves, including four against Penn … he posted his third clean sheet of the season with Saturday's shutout.

Notes: Muriel Albino leads the squad with six goals and 13 points on the season … Robles Grajera recorded his second career multi-goal performance on Saturday and finished with a career-best five points … WVU has now won 27 consecutive matches when scoring two or more goals in a match … the Mountaineers have scored twice or more in four of their last five matches … WVU is now unbeaten in 22 of its last 28 nonconference, home games … West Virginia and San Diego will meet for the first time on Friday night.

This Week in Volleyball: WVU (8-6, 0-2) will take on Iowa State (9-4, 0-1) on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m., at the WVU Coliseum … during the match, Mountaineer fans will receive an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to the West Virginia vs. Texas football game set for 3:30 p.m. … the match is free to the public and will feature a 'Beat Texas' t-shirt to the first 500 fans … Saturday's match also is a part of WVU volleyball's alumni weekend.

Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia suffered back-to-back four-set losses to open Big 12 play last week, falling to Texas Tech on Wednesday and Oklahoma on Saturday … the Red Raiders took the match from the Mountaineers in set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-19 in Lubbock, Texas … sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan had a team-best 20 kills for WVU … sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas also collected her fourth double-double of the season, recording 40 assists and a career-high 19 digs in the loss … WVU fell to OU in set scores of 25-8, 25-23, 29-31 and 25-21 … senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans led the way with 12 kills, while junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting led the floor defense with a season-high 24 digs.

Notes: West Virginia and Iowa State will meet for the 18th time overall on Saturday and the 15th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012 … ISU owns a 16-1 all-time series advantage, as the Cyclones picked up a 3-1 win over the Mountaineers in their most recent meeting on Nov. 10, 2018, at the Hilton, Coliseum, in Ames, Iowa … as a team, WVU is hitting .204, while holding its opponents to a .194 clip … Jordan leads the team with 3.29 kills per set, followed by sophomore outside hitter Kristin Lux, with 2.54 per set … Hasting leads the floor defense with 4.41 digs per set, while redshirt junior Audrey Adams leads the team's blocking efforts, with 48 total blocks, averaging 0.98 per set.

This Week in Cross Country: After a week off, the Mountaineers return to competition on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas … the women's 5k race is scheduled to begin at 11:40 a.m. ET at the University of Arkansas Cross Country Course.

Last Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers were off last week … WVU last competed at the Lock Haven Invitational on Sept. 21, in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania … seven Mountaineers finished in the top 10 to secure the team's first win of the season at the West Branch Cross Country Course … junior Hayley Jackson led WVU with a second-place overall finish, posting a 6k time of 20:42 … redshirt senior Candace Archer took third place in 21:06.6 … redshirt senior Olivia Hill notched a fourth-place finish in 21:06.7, followed by freshman Ceili McCabe in fifth (21:16.8) and redshirt junior Antigone Archer in sixth (21:19.9) … WVU topped the team standings with 15 points.

Notes: WVU's trip to the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival on Saturday marks its first visit to the home course of the Razorbacks … the win at Lock Haven was its first of the season and second consecutive at Lock Haven University's annual meet … Jackson's performance marked the first top-five finish of her career … she also collected Big 12 Women's Runner of the Week honors on Sept. 24 for her performance at Lock Haven … Hill and Candace Archer finished in the top five for the second consecutive season at Lock Haven … two other Mountaineers tallied top-10 finishes as redshirt freshman Katherine Dowie took seventh (21:21.3) and redshirt sophomore Marianne Abdalah took ninth (21:25.8) … Hill and Abdalah posted their top times of 2019, as each finished in the top 10 for the second time this season … six Mountaineers made their season debuts at Lock Haven, including Antigone Archer, Candace Archer, Dowie, Jackson, McCabe and redshirt freshman Samantha Hatcher … the meet also marked the collegiate debut for Dowie, Hatcher and McCabe.

Last Week in Golf: West Virginia competed at The Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational … the event was hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina … the Mountaineers finished tied with No. 16 Louisville for third place at 12-under-par … senior Etienne Papineau led the way with a sixth-place finish, shooting seven-under with a 203 … junior Matthew Sharpstene also posted a top-20 finish, shooting two-under with a 208 to take 16th place … freshman Nico Lang picked up his second top-25 finish, carding a 209 to finish T-20th at one-under-par.

Notes: Papineau's 54-hole total of 203 is a program record … he shaved three strokes off the program record of 206, set by Alan Cooke in 2017 and tied by Kurtis Grant last season … WVU set a program record with a team total of 828, besting the previous mark of 835 set at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic Invitational last year … No. 9 Washington finished 30-under to claim the team title, while No. 1 Wake Forest was the runner up at 21-under-par … the Mountaineers earned their first-ever top 25 ranking, coming in at No. 25 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll … WVU is one of five Big 12 programs in the rankings ... No. 3 Baylor (550) leads the way, while Texas Tech (461) ranks at No. 6. Oklahoma (385) comes in at No. 9 and is followed by Texas (382) at No. 10 … additionally, TCU (21), Iowa State (8) and Kansas (8) also received votes in the poll.

Last Season in Tennis: The Mountaineers traveled to Williamsburg, Virginia, to compete at the 2019 William & Mary Hall of Fame Classic ... as a team, West Virginia finished the weekend with a record of 12-9, including a 10-5 mark in singles play ... four Mountaineers posted three total wins at William & Mary ... sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia and freshman Kat Lyman both posted a 3-0 record in singles play ... four Mountaineers tied for the team lead last weekend with one doubles victory.

Notes: Through two tournaments this fall, West Virginia has compiled an overall record of 29-18 - 22-10 in singles and 7-8 in doubles ... juniors Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau and Lyman are all tied for the team lead in total wins, with eight ... Lyman also leads the team in singles wins and has posted an unblemished, 6-0 record to start the fall ... pairing with each other in all six doubles contests this season, Caputo and Courteau are tied for the team lead in doubles victories, with three.
