Papineau Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After guiding the golf team to a third-place finish at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational last week, senior Etienne Papineau has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Papineau finished in sixth place to lead West Virginia to a tie for third place at the event.
The senior from St-Jean-Sur-Richlieu, Quebec, Canada, recorded a bogey-free first round to finish even-par at 70 before adding a trio of birdies in the second round to card a 68 for two-under-par on the day. He used five birdies to fire a 65 in the third round, finishing with a program-record 54-hole total of 203 at the tournament. His score bested the previous program record of 206, set in 2017 by Alan Cooke and tied in 2018 by Kurtis Grant.
Papineau's performance helped WVU earn its first-ever top-25 ranking as the Mountaineers came in at No. 25 in the first Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll of the season.
This Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia continues its conference slate with a swing through the Lone Star State, as the Mountaineers take on Baylor on Thursday, Oct. 3, and Texas on Sunday, Oct. 6 … Thursday's match will kick at 8 p.m. ET and will be aired on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, while Sunday's contest is slated to begin at 2 p.m. on the Longhorn Network.
Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU (6-3-1) netted two goals in the first half and the defense recorded its fifth clean sheet of the season to defeat Iowa State 2-0 in the first game of conference play on Sept. 27 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … the Mountaineers took just one shot before finding the back of the net in the ninth minute as senior midfielder Jessica Lisi took a cross from classmate Jade Gentile inside the box and snuck a ball inside the right post to give the Mountaineers an early, 1-0 lead … junior Stefany Ferrar-vanGinkel doubled the Mountaineer lead in the 27th minute as she sent a header into the right side of the net … the WVU defense earned its fifth shutout of the season as senior goalkeeper Rylee Foster registered a season-high six saves against the Cyclones.
