MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams open the 2019-20 season with the Gold-Blue Meet on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the WVU Natatorium.
The annual intrasquad event is set to begin at 10 a.m. ET, and admission is free.
"It will be good to see everyone race tomorrow," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "The team has done a great job through the first six weeks of practice. Saturday's meet will give the staff a chance to see how they are responding to training as we prepare to enter our dual-meet season."
The Mountaineers will again split into two teams for the preseason competition. The Blue Team is coming off its second consecutive victory in 2018, after defeating the Gold Team, 238.5-224.5, at last year's meet.
Saturday also marks the start of Riggs' 13th season at the helm of the WVU men's and women's swimming and diving program. Last season, WVU qualified three swimmers to the NCAA Championships, collected two Big 12 individual championships and sent nine divers to the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships. The men's team secured a second-place team finish at the Big 12 Championship, while the women's team placed third.
In all, nine school records were broken last season, as well as four WVU Natatorium records. The 2018-19 season marked the team's final year in the Natatorium, as it moves to its new home at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park this fall.
Junior David Dixon collected individual championships in the 100 and 200 butterfly at the Big 12 Championship a year ago, marking the second consecutive season WVU would finish with multiple individual conference titles.
Additionally, Jake Armstrong, Dixon and senior Morgan Bullock represented the Mountaineers at the 2019 NCAA Championship.
Nine divers qualified for the 2019 Zone A Diving Championships, including Camille Burt, Jacob Cardinal Tremblay, Julia Calcut, Nick Cover, Averly Hobbs, P.J. Lenz, Emma Longley, Callie Smith and Madelyn Woods.
Twenty-two newcomers (11 men, 11 women) join WVU's squad this season, which is led by 15 seniors (10 men, five women).
The Mountaineers officially open the regular season when they visit Penn State from Oct. 11-12, in University Park, Pennsylvania. The men will compete on Friday, beginning at 5 p.m. ET, while the women will compete on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET, at McCoy Natatorium.
