WVU Rolls Past Coppin State

NEWARK, Del. – Hitting .323 in the match, the West Virginia University volleyball team swept Coppin State, 3-0, in the second of three matches at the 2019 Delaware Classic Saturday morning, held inside the Bob Carpenter Center, in Newark, Delaware. The Mountaineers (2-0) took the match from the Eagles (1-1) in set scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-16.
"For the most part, we played pretty consistent throughout the match," fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "We did some nice things, but we have a lot to work on. We are going to get back to work tonight against Binghamton and go from there."
Sophomore outside hitter Kristin Lux finished the match with a team-high 10 kills. Junior middle blocker Briana Lynch and sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan was good for nine kills each, while redshirt junior middle blocker Audrey Adams added five.
Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 34 assists, adding a team-high five block assists. Adams also posted four block assists in the match.
Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting led the floor defense with a season-high 21 digs.
Additionally, Jordan notched a team-high two service aces for WVU. The Mountaineers hit .323 with 44 kills on 93 attacks and eight team blocks.
Hitting .522 behind five kills from Jordan, West Virginia handily claimed the first set, 25-14. A six-point scoring streak put WVU ahead 11-6 before a CSU kill halted its run. Back-to-back-to-back Mountaineer kills, followed by an ace from Jordan, gave West Virginia the 19-10 lead. WVU then capitalized on a trio of CSU miscues for the 23-12 advantage. A pair of kills from Miajavon Coleman kept the Eagles hopes alive before Adams came up with two huge swings to bring the Mountaineers to set point at 24-14. A CSU attacking error ended the frame, handing WVU the first-set victory and the 1-0 match lead.
With the second set knotted at 12 apiece, WVU used a 6-0 scoring run for a 17-12 lead over CSU. Coppin State went on a scoring streak of its own to come within two, down 19-17 late in the frame. Consecutive kills from Adams got the Mountaineers back on track, pushing the Mountaineers' lead to four at 22-18. A service ace from Lux brought WVU to set point, as Jordan was able to put down a kill for the 25-19 win and the 2-0 match advantage.
West Virginia jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the third set and never looked back. The Eagles used three straight Mountaineer attacking errors to come within five at 21-16, but it wasn't enough, as senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans came up with a trio of swings to claim the third-set victory at 25-18, handing WVU the sweep.
West Virginia concludes play at the two-day tournament this afternoon, as the Mountaineers go head-to-head with Binghamton in a 4:30 p.m. ET tilt. Live stats can be found at WVUsports.com.
