WVU Places Seven on WCGA Scholastic All-America List

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Seven West Virginia University gymnasts were named Scholastic All-Americans, as the 2018-19 honors were announced by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) on Monday evening.
Since 1987, WVU gymnasts have earned 147 WCGA Scholastic All-America awards.
In addition to its individual honors, the team's grade point average (GPA) of 3.4250 ranks at No. 44 in the nation.
"I am extremely proud of these student-athletes and all their hard work representing WVU," gymnastics coach Jason Butts said. "Above all, I am proud of their work in the classroom and their focus and dedication to their studies and their future after collegiate gymnastics. They truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete."
A pair of Mountaineers collected their fourth career honors – graduates Kirah Koshinski (communications studies) and Jaquie Tun (graphic design).
An additional three gymnasts were honored for the third time – graduate Carly Galpin (elementary education) and seniors Abby Kaufman (exercise physiology) and Julia Merwin (sport & exercise psychology).
Junior McKenna Linnen (marketing) was recognized for the second straight year, while sophomore Esperanza Abarca (exercise physiology) garnered the honor for the first time.
To qualify for the exclusive honor, a gymnast must have a GPA of 3.50 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher at the nominating institution. Overall, there were 31 teams and more than 56 percent of student-athletes maintaining a GPA of 3.50 or more on a 4.0 scale. A record number of student-athletes, 125, recorded a 4.0 GPA.
The WCGA is an advocate for women's collegiate gymnastics. The association seeks to actively manage and develop the sport of women's gymnastics at the collegiate level and works with the NCAA and USA Gymnastics in order to provide the best possible experience for student-athletes.
