
Seven Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Seven members of the West Virginia University track and field team were named All-Academic Individuals, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) this week.
Redshirt seniors Madelin Gardner (biomechanical engineering), Shamoya McNeil (occupational therapy) and Bria Welker (physical therapy), redshirt junior Olivia Hill (exercise physiology), redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills (biomedical engineering), redshirt freshman Bree Warren (speech pathology) and freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden (psychology) were recognized for their hard work in the classroom and on the track.
Additionally, the Mountaineers were named an All-Academic Team by the USTFCCCA. WVU earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.61 during the spring semester.
A total of 902 female student-athletes earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for the 2018-19 seasons, while 366 teams, including 227 women's programs, received team accolades.
To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards: For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Gardner, Hill and McNeil qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Regional to earn All-Academic honors. Gardner also qualified for the 2019 NCAA Championships, earning Second Team All-America recognition by tying for ninth place in the pole vault and collecting her fourth career All-America honor.
Vanderheyden, Welker and Wills received All-Big 12 indoor honors as members of the distance medley relay team, while Warren collected All-Big 12 outdoor recognition in the 10,000 meters.
