MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team will look to build on last season's historic success as the Mountaineers embark on their 2019-20 slate, announced by Director of Athletics/Associated Vice President Shane Lyons on Wednesday.
The Mountaineers make their return to ten regular-season tournaments and will host The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational and the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. A new season-opener and a new head-to-head matchup complete the schedule, which will serve as a follow up to a history 2018-19 schedule in which WVU saw its first NCAA action in 72 years.
"We are excited about this year's schedule as it will be the most challenging do date," coach Sean Covich said. "Luckily we are able to return to several familiar golf courses which should help our guys prepare. We want to provide a tough schedule so that our guys can play against the best in college golf on some of the best golf courses around. We lost two outstanding seniors in Max (Sear) and Tristan (Nicholls), so we will need to have our guys step up."
To start the season WVU travels to Independence, Minnesota, to make its debut at the prestigious Gopher Invitational. Minnesota will play host to the event on Sept. 8-9 at Windsong Farm Golf Club. The Mountaineers will make their return to the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational at Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Sept. 23-24. Kurtis Grant tied a program record at last year's event, hosted by Wake Forest, with a three-round score of 206 for a 12th-place finish.
The squad returns home to host The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The defending champion Mountaineers will host Akron, UConn, Davidson, Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, George Washington, James Madison, Marshall, Towson, Rice, Southern Mississippi, Washington State, Xavier and Youngstown State on Oct. 7-8.
The second annual Big 12 Match Play Championship will take place Oct. 11-13 at the Golf Club at Houston Oaks in Houston, Texas. Following that, West Virginia will join UCF in hosting the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational for the third consecutive season at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windermere, Florida, from Oct. 20-22. The Mountaineers and the Knights will play host to South Carolina, LSU, Auburn, Florida, Vanderbilt, California, Arizona State, Texas Tech, Texas, Illinois, Augusta, UNLV and Minnesota.
West Virginia will cap 2019 fall play in Hawaii, as the team competes in the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic Lahaina for the third straight season. The tournament, hosted by Hawaii, will play out at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course in Lahaina from Nov. 1-3.
The Mountaineers return to the links on Feb. 2 with a head-to-head tilt with UConn at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Florida – the first of three straight tournaments in the Sunshine State. They'll play in the Florida Gator Invitational on Feb. 15-16, which is set to be hosted by the Gators at Mark Bostic Golf Course in Gainesville. The following week WVU returns to the Seminole Intercollegiate, hosted by Florida State on Feb. 22-23 at Golden Eagle Golf and Country Club.
West Virginia will take part in The Hootie at Bull's Bay Intercollegiate, hosted by South Carolina from March 22-24. The Mountaineers made their debut in last season's event at Bull's Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, South Carolina. The squad will return to the Carolinas soon after, as they compete in the Irish Creek Collegiate on April 4-5. Davidson and Charlotte will co-host the event at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
Per tradition, the Mountaineers will cap the regular season at Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate, held April 18-19 at the Penn State Blue Golf Course.
The Big 12 Men's Golf Championship returns to Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with Oklahoma State serving as host of the event from April 27-29.
The 2020 NCAA Regionals will be hosted at various sites from May 18-20, with teams advancing to the 2020 NCAA National Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, from May 29-June 3.
