MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams once again have been named Scholar All-America Teams by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for their academic success during the 2019 spring semester.
The Mountaineer women's team earned the recognition for the 23rd consecutive semester after recording a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.55. The WVU men combined for a 3.25 GPA, earning the national honor for the fourth consecutive semester and fifth time in the last six semesters.
"Coach (Vic) Riggs has produced a model that the University can be proud of in every way – academically, athletically and in the community," CSCAA executive director Greg Earhart noted.
Additionally, every Big 12 swimming and diving program was named a Scholar All-America Team in the spring semester. TCU and Texas joined West Virginia on the men's and women's side, while Iowa State and Kansas also were included on the women's list.
The award, presented twice a year, recognizes college and university swimming and diving teams who achieved a cumulative semester GPA of 3.0 or higher. In all, a record 777 teams from 480 schools were named to the Scholar All-America list for the 2019 spring semester.
Founded in 1922, the CSCAA – the oldest organization of college coaches in America – is a professional organization of college swimming and diving coaches dedicated to serving and providing leadership for the advancement of the sport of swimming and diving at the collegiate level.
The CSCAA will announce its individual Scholar All-Americans next week.
