MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 9, 2019) – Twenty-two members of the West Virginia University rowing team were named to the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Rowing Team, as announced by the conference on Thursday.
Fifteen Mountaineers were selected to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team – seniors Alexis Brown (multidisciplinary studies), Amy Hoaglund (multidisciplinary studies), Madison Hrynda (agribusiness management), Carly Ledbetter (graphic design), Kaitlin Sullivan (nursing) and Emma Winders (multidisciplinary studies); redshirt juniors Janae Hurst (public health) and Abigail Patrick (management); juniors Madisyn Lee (criminology) and Lize Morris; redshirt sophomore Megan Sutherland (forensic and investigative sciences); sophomores Cassia Busch (animal & nutritional sciences), Allyson George (ceramics) and Jordan Wittmaack (sport management); redshirt freshman Rylee Haught (psychology).
The award marks the third time Hoaglund, Ledbetter and Sullivan have been selected to the first team. It also marks the second time that Hurst, Lee, Morris, Patrick and Winders have garnered first-team honors.
West Virginia also had seven Academic All-Big 12 Second Team selections, the most in the conference – juniors Gabrielle Boylan (nursing), Louise Daenekindt (physical education-teacher education), Lindsay Krawczyk (nursing), Payton Rea (human nutrition & foods) and Hannah Simmerly (forensic chemistry); sophomores Kileigh Lade (landscape architecture) and Olivia Martinelli (physical education-teacher education).
This year marks the second time that Boylan and Krawczyk have been named to the second team.
"We truly appreciate the continual efforts of our student-athletes to better themselves in the classroom, as well as in sport," said coach Jimmy King. "Kudos to these Mountaineers!"
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade point average (GPA), while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulative or the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Mountaineers return to the water on Sunday, May 19, for the 2019 Big 12 Championship on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
