
McNeil Concludes East Prelims

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Shamoya McNeil of the West Virginia University track and field team concluded action at the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary Round, at Hodges Stadium, in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday.
McNeil finished 28th overall in the triple jump first round, earning a top mark of 12.52 meters (41 feet, 1 inch). The performance was good for fourth place in the second flight. In all, the event featured four flights with the top-12 jumpers advancing to the NCAA Championships.
The Portland, Jamaica, native capped her Mountaineer career at the East Prelims on Saturday, her fourth appearance at the regional meet. McNeil was named a Third Team All-American in 2017 and ranks No. 2 in program history in the indoor and outdoor triple jump.
On Friday, redshirt senior Madelin Gardner qualified for the NCAA Championships after tying for first place in the pole vault first round. Gardner, a three-time All-American, needed only one attempt to clear 4.17 meters (13 feet, 8.25 inches) and advance to her fourth career national meet, including her second outdoors. The NCAA Championships are set to commence from June 5-8, at Mike A. Myers Stadium, in Austin, Texas.
Two Mountaineers opened the East Prelims on Thursday night, as redshirt junior Olivia Hill finished 30th in the 10,000 meters semifinal, earning a time of 35:28.48, while redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson took 35th place in the 1,500 meters first round in 4:29.39.
The four qualified Mountaineers ranked in the top 48 of the NCAA East Region in their respective events to earn entry into the regional meet. The top-12 finishers in each event moved on to the NCAA Championships.
