MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team finished its season at the 2019 Big 12 Championship on Sunday afternoon, hosted on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
"We felt our preparation went well this year, and our crews did indeed race well on the day," said coach Jimmy King. "While the results didn't match our goals, today's effort and execution certainly did."
Following a one-hour fog delay, the Mountaineers started off in the third varsity eight final. WVU's third varsity eight boat crossed the finish line in 7:39.009 to place seventh.
In the second varsity four final, West Virginia's second varsity four crew raced its way to a seventh-place finish with a time of 8:04.860.
The Mountaineers' first varsity four boat finished the first four final with a time of 8:10.378 to claim seventh place.
In the second eight final, WVU's second varsity eight crew crossed the finish line in 7:29.974 to finish in seventh place.
West Virginia's final race came in the first varsity eight final, where the first varsity eight boat finished with a time of 7:06.755 to claim seventh place.
The Mountaineers finished the day with a qualifying team score of six points to place seventh. Among Big 12 members, WVU placed fifth with a team score of 49. Texas claimed this year's Big 12 Championship crown after winning every event.
Of note, junior Hannah Simmerly was named to the All-Big 12 Rowing Team, marking WVU's second consecutive selection. Last year, senior Carly Ledbetter represented West Virginia on the All-Big 12 Rowing Team.
"Congratulations to Hannah Simmerly for earning All-Big 12 Conference honors," said King. "She has matured in many ways this year, and I'm looking forward to her continued growth and leadership in the year ahead."
Following the conclusion of the 2019 Big 12 Championship, the West Virginia University rowing team has concluded its 2018-19 season. It also marked the final race for nine Mountaineer seniors – Dana Bishop, Alexis Brown, Grace Dever, Micah Gibbons, Amy Hoaglund, Madison Hrynda, Carly Ledbetter, Abigail Patrick and Kaitlin Sullivan.
"Much thanks to our seniors who leave our program better than when they arrived," King added. "We look forward to welcoming them back in the fall for homecoming and another row on the Mon' river."
