
Gardner Earns Silver Medal on Day Two of Big 12s

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team continued competition at the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship, in Norman, Oklahoma, on Saturday.
Redshirt senior Madelin Gardner led the way for the Mountaineers, tying for second place in the pole vault and sharing the silver medal. The Williamstown, West Virginia, native recorded her best finish at a conference meet in her career, earning a mark of 4.27 meters (14 feet).
In all, WVU competed in eight events on the second day of the three-day meet at Oklahoma's John Jacobs Track Complex.
Redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson began the day with a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter prelims. Jackson, who won her section, crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 4:21.88, qualifying for Sunday's event final. Redshirt junior Candace Jones also competed, finishing 12th in 4:26.52.
In the 400 meters, redshirt senior Bria Welker placed 18th with a season-best time of 56.15. Later, the Ridgeley, West Virginia, native competed in the 200 meters, taking 22nd place in a season-best 25.26.
Freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden earned a 15th-place finish in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:10.61, while freshman Margaret Rymer took 16th in the 400-meter hurdles in a season-best 1:04.65. Redshirt freshman Katherine Dowie closed the night on the track with a 10th-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, registering a time of 11:19.97.
In the field, freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie finished 19th in the long jump, earning a mark of 5.56 meters (18 feet, 3 inches). Additionally, three other Mountaineers competed in the pole vault along with Gardner. Freshman Molly DeBone finished 20th with a mark of 3.47 meters (11 feet, 4.5 inches), while sophomores Ellie Gardner and Mikayla Shute tied for 21st place with a mark of matching mark of 3.47 meters.
Following Saturday's action, the Mountaineers sit in seventh place as a team with a total of 16 points.
The 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship concludes on Sunday, beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET. WVU is set to compete in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters on the track, as well as the high jump, triple jump and discus throw in the field.

The meet also features five teams in the nation's top 40 of the Track & Field Rating Index (TFRI) and nine in the top 80.
