
Mountaineers Visit Virginia for Four-Team Meet

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team travels to Charlottesville, Virginia, to compete in a four-team event on Saturday, April 6.
The Mountaineers are set to take on host Virginia, Maryland and Pitt at the Cavaliers' Lannigan Field. The meet is slated to begin with field events at 12 p.m. ET, while running events are scheduled to commence at 2 p.m.

Saturday marks the first of two trips to Virginia for WVU this outdoor season. West Virginia also will compete at the Virginia Challenge, from April 19-20, in Charlottesville. In all, this weekend marks the eighth time the Mountaineers are competing at Lannigan Field since 2014.
The Mountaineers are coming off a four-meet weekend, which featured WVU representatives across the country. Out West, redshirt freshman Katherine Dowie placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, in Hayward, California, on March 28, while redshirt junior Olivia Hill and redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson competed at the Stanford Invitational, in Stanford, California, on March 29. Jackson finished 15th in the 5,000 meters (section 2) with a time of 16:20.50, before Hill took 21st in the 10,000 meters (section 2) in 34:28.53.
Redshirt senior Madelin Gardner earned a 10th-place finish in the pole vault (university elite) at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, on March 30, in Austin, Texas. Gardner finished with a mark of 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5.25 inches) at the event and received a first look at the site of the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships, which is set for June 5-8, in Austin.
On the East Coast, the Mountaineers competed at the Raleigh Relays, in Raleigh, North Carolina, from March 29-30. Redshirt junior Candace Jones led the way with a 14th-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.54, while redshirt senior Bria Welker placed 14th in the 400 meters in 56.61.
Last year, the Mountaineers competed in a pair of meets at Virginia. The squad combined to earn 11 top-10 finishes at the Virginia Challenge, highlighted by a school-record performance by Madelin Gardner. The Williamstown, West Virginia, native topped her previous WVU outdoor record in the pole vault with a mark of 4.41 meters (14 feet, 5.5 inches) in a second-place finish.
WVU also competed at the 2018 Virginia Grand Prix, earning seven top-five finishes, including two wins. Amy Cashin won the 1,500 meters in 4:21.56, while sophomore Ellie Gardner was victorious in the pole vault (unseeded) with a mark of 3.81 meters (12 feet, 6 inches).
Several Mountaineers are featured in the top 50 of the national performance list entering the weekend. Gardner ranks No. 29 nationally in the pole vault with a top mark of 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5.25 inches), while redshirt senior Shamoya McNeil sits No. 32 nationally in the triple jump (12.74 meters – 41 feet, 9.75 inches). Dowie ranks No. 50 in the steeplechase after last week's performance of 10:35.96.
Jackson is ranked in a pair of events this week. The Lusby, Maryland, native is slotted 36th nationally in the 5,000 meters (16:20.50) and No. 43 in the 1,500 meters (4:23.15).
